Monday, August 5, 2013

The prize-winning, acclaimed Euclid Quartet will perform music by Haydn, Wynton Marsalis and Bela Bartok Wednesday night as the Greencastle Summer Music Festival continues its series of free concerts in Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church.

The performance, which begins at 7:30 p.m. is sponsored in part by the Inn at DePauw.

"I'm thrilled that we are able to present one of the finest young string quartets in the world," festival founder and artistic director Eric Edberg said.

"They have performed internationally, including top venues venues like Carnegie Hall," added Edberg, a DePauw University music professor. "Thanks to the generosity of the festival's donors and the Inn at DePauw, they can be heard for free here in Greencastle."

Edberg is particularly delighted that the group's performance will include selections from jazz great Wynton Marsalis' String Quartet No. 1 "At the Octoroon Balls," in addition to masterworks by Haydn and Bartok.

The Euclid Quartet is a dynamic ensemble known for performances filled with personality and vibrant color. Originally from the U.S., Great Britain, Venezuela and China, the quartet has won many prizes at major competitions around the world, and holds the prestigious Quartet Residency at Indiana University South Bend.

The group combines new and challenging works with the established masterpieces to create varied and exciting programs.

Quartet members are Jameson Cooper and Jacob Murphy, violins; Luis Enrique Vargas, viola; and Si-Yan Darren Li, cello.

The Greencastle Summer Music Festival is designed with a musical mission of bringing the community together with a goal of friends making music for friends.

Free concerts, supported by donations, are conducted every Wednesday through Aug. 21 in the sanctuary of Gobin Church at Seminary and Locust streets in Greencastle.
