Featured Athlete of the Week: Melody White, Soccer, Greencastle High School

Thursday, August 29, 2013

Greencastle senior Melody White begins her senior year at Greencastle with a 4.0 GPA and as co-president of the school's Fellowship of Christian Athletes, along with Taylor Secrest. She is also a phenomenal player and leader for the Tiger Cubs soccer and tennis teams. GHS soccer coach Jamie Grivas says White is one of her hardest and most consistent workers, always playing the right way, but her contributions extend beyond the field. She is also a strong influence on the younger players who keeps a positive attitude no matter the situation. In addition to playing soccer and tennis, she likes to spend her free time with her family. Her favorite classes (so far) are calculus, anatomy and physiology and English.

Banner Graphic: What is your favorite memory of playing soccer at Greencastle?
Melody White: I just really like it when our team all comes together. When we know what we're doing and we implement what we're learning all throughout summer and when all the stuff clicks I just think that's really awesome. When we play together as a team and we all fit together and are able to win together. When it's not just one person doing all the work, but defense is doing their part, the offense is doing their part and the goalie is doing her part and it just all works together.

BG: Does soccer just bring you to kind of a special place?
MW: Yeah. I really like soccer. It's my favorite sport. I like tennis, too, but I've played soccer for a while and I just really love our team, especially this year. I think this is going to be an awesome year because we have so much potential and it's kind of fun just to be outdoors and be kicking around a ball with a bunch of girls.

BG: When did you start playing?
MW: I think when I was six. I'm not really sure when I started playing, but it's been a while.

BG: Do you have a soccer role model? Who is your favorite athlete?
MW: I sort of like watching Abby Wambach because she has really awesome headers and she's just pretty much an awesome soccer player. It was fun watching the women's team go to the World Cup. They were so close to winning.

BG: Do you feel different now that you're a senior on the team?
MW: Yeah, it's kind of crazy imagining that after this year I'll be done with this soccer team because I've been on it for four years. It's fun, though, because I get to see how everybody has been growing and how all their strengths are fitting together and it's cool just to see how we all work together and how the program has progressed.

BG: Do you know your plans after high school yet? It's kind of early, but do you know what you want to study?
MW: I'm interested in becoming an occupational therapist, so I'm looking at Cedarville and Taylor to major in an allied health-type of field to help prepare to become an occupational therapist.
