Margaret ("Peggy") Gardner, 100, died on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013.

Born Jan. 6, 1913, in Marengo, Ill., to Callie and Clarence White, she and her family of seven moved to Los Angeles in 1919

Peggy graduated from Los Angeles City Schools and worked as a bookkeeper for several organizations, including the Oakland Shrine Organization.

She is survived by two daughters, five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

At the age of 24, Peggy took a cruise to Hawaii and bewitched a handsome engineer, William Nawman. They were married in September 1937, and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where they raised two daughters.

After Bill died in 1970, Peggy remarried to Floyd Bull in 1979, and, after his death in 1980, Peggy remarried in 1982 to Jack Gardner.

After 87 years in California, Peggy moved to Portland, Ore., to be near her daughter Sally Gaillard.

In 2007, Peggy proudly became a Hoosier, moving to the Asbury Towers Retirement Community to live nearer to her other daughter, Barbara Miller.

Peggy spent a lifetime serving others. She was a volunteer for the Campfire Girls, a pink lady for hospitals, a reader for the blind, and a volunteer at thrift stores.

She learned the game of golf at 60 and was an accomplished bridge player.

The family thanks the residents and staff of Asbury Towers for the wonderful care and companionship they provided Peggy.

A local memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27 at Asbury Towers. Family members will have a private service in Berkeley, Calif., laying Peggy to rest beside her first husband.

Condolences can be expressed online at Hopkins-rector.com. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to redcross.org/donate or woundedwarriorproject.org/donate.
