Tiger Cubs wrap cross country season at Carmel Semi-State

CARMEL -- The Greencastle cross country teams have a history of postseason success, including trips to semi-state for the boys' team in 2011 and the girls' team in 2012, but after losing several talented runners last season there was a chance 2013 could be a dip for the Tiger Cubs.

The four runners who reached Saturday's Carmel Semi-State showed that wouldn't happen.

Elijah Brattain, who first competed at semi-state as a freshman two years ago, finished the boys' race at 17:47.

Juniors Sammy Haynes and Brittany Love and sophomore Corrie Romer, competitors last year as team, finished at 21:53, 22:13 and 24:01, respectively.

All the runners gutted it out under tough conditions on a tough course, GHS coach Garry Anderson said.

"It was colder than cold," he said. "But everybody runs in the cold. It's not like, 'it's cold in my lane and in her lane it's hot.'"

While all the Greencastle runners have previous experience at the Carmel course, it was still unlike any course they'd seen this year with constant curves and hills.

Racing with other, faster competitors also presented a challenge as it gave little comparative for pacing, something Anderson said Brattain struggled with early.

He finished strong, placing 132nd.

Haynes and Love both exceeded expectations for the girls squad, Anderson said, and Romer gutted out the race to finish despite an abdominal cramp that has plagued her at various times throughout the season.

Greencastle's recent running success has helped build upon itself and build a work-ethic and competitiveness that fuels them to return and fight hard in each practice and each race.

"They've all been here twice," Anderson said. "Once you've been there and you see it's possible, what got you there?

"They become more responsible for their training. They've worked hard this season and they've worked hard this summer."
