Top-ranked Tigers open hoops season with win over Cardinals

FRANKLIN -- Junior Emma Ondik scored a career-high 17 points and helped lead top-ranked DePauw women's basketball team to an 80-46 win over Otterbein in the season opener for both teams at the Franklin Tip-off Tournament.

Ondik knocked in five 3-pointers as the Tigers hit nine as a team. Savannah Trees followed with 14 points and Ali Ross added 13.

Amariah Huck led Otterbein with 13 points, while Madi Miller added 11.

The win was DePauw's 35th straight overall and 54th straight regular season triumph.

DePauw faces Franklin on Saturday at 3 p.m.

DePauw men beat Trinity International

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- The DePauw men's basketball team opened its 2013 campaign with an 85-39 blowout win over Trinity International at the Chicago Marriott Naperville Tip-Off Tournament held at North Central College. The Trojans dropped to 1-6 with the loss.

DePauw jumped out to a quick 16-2 lead and extended it to a 44-18 halftime advantage.

The second half proved to be more of the same as the Tigers cruised to victory outscoring Trinity 41-21 in the half. DePauw shot 48 percent from 3-point range, draining 12 in the contest.

Connor Rich led the Tigers with 14 points on 4-5 three-point shooting, while Pat Haggin posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jeff Sustarisc added 10 points in the win.

Blake Mann paced Trinity International with 13 points and Andy Stauffer grabbed 11 rebounds.

DePauw held a 51-39 edge on the boards including 20 on the offensive glass in a contest where they never trailed. The Tigers shot 40.9 percent from the floor, but were just 19-36 from the line for 52.8 percent.

The Tigers are back in action Saturday night when they take on host North Central College at 8:30 p.m.

Tigers Fall in Straight Sets to Otterbein

ELMHURST, Ill. -- After a 13-year drought the 25th-ranked DePauw volleyball team returned to the NCAA Division III Championship Thursday afternoon against first round opponent Otterbein University at the Elmhurst College Regional.

The Tigers battled in a hard fought match, but ultimately fell to #18 Otterbein in straight sets 25-21, 25-15, 25-23. DePauw dropped to 26-7 to finish out their season, while the Cardinals improved to 27-7 and will play No. 2 Hope College in second round action.
