Cross country teams earn All-Academic honors

The DePauw men's and women's cross country teams have been named 2013 Division III All-Academic Cross Country teams by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country team, the team must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA regional meet and have a minimum 3.10 team cumulative grade point average.

The men's team was one of 146 institutions to earn the honor with a 3.18 first semester grade point average.

The women's team was one of 215 institutions to be honored with a 3.45 first semester grade point average.

DePauw was one of 141 schools to have both cross country teams honored.

Sophomore Heather O'Brien was named to the All-Academic team as an individual. To qualify, O'Brien had to have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 through the most recent semester and placed in the top 35 at the NCAA Regional Championships.

O'Brien, a kinesiology major, maintained a 3.86 grade point average through the fall semester and is being honored for the second straight year.

Gasaway named women's basketball Player of Week

DePauw senior forward Alex Gasaway was named the North Coast Athletic Conference player of the week after leading the Tigers in two wins last week.

Gasaway notched her first double-double of the season grabbing 11 rebounds and scoring 11 points in the Tigers' 73-48 win over Wittenberg last Wednesday. She followed that performance up by tying her season-high 20 point output in an 80-47 win over Kenyon. Gasaway shot 50.0 percent (12-24) over the two-game stretch grabbing 19 rebounds as well.

Prior to Saturday's game against Kenyon, Gasaway and her fellow senior classmates were honored for their contributions to the program. DePauw's five seniors (Gasaway, Ali Ross, Alison Stephens, Erin McGinnis and Ann Sarkisian) improved to 110-6 with the win over Kenyon. The 110 wins are second by a Division III senior class this year and the .948 winning percentage is the best in the nation.

Additionally, Gasaway became just the second player in school history with at least 1,100 points and 600 rebounds.

The top-ranked Tigers close out their conference season Saturday, Feb. 22, when they travel to Ohio Wesleyan. This contest is scheduled for a 1 p.m. tipoff.

DePauw junior Maggie MacPhail (Indianapolis, Ind./Park Tudor) earned North Coast Athletic Conference player of the week honors after leading the 13th-ranked Tigers to a 6-3 victory over 12th-ranked Washington (Mo.) on Sunday.

MacPhail, who is ranked 21st in the region in singles, topped the region's 11th-ranked player in straignt sets 7-5, 6-4. She followed that up by teaming with Caroline Emhardt for an 8-3 doubles win.
