Afternoon Crash

An accident occurred at 12:42 p.m. on Monday as Thomas B. Wheeler, 78, Greencastle, was westbound on Franklin Street approaching the stop sign at Arlington Street. Investigating officer Ed Wilson stated that Wheeler's foot then slipped and hit the gas pedal instead of the brake in his 2001 Lincoln Town Car causing him to swerve into the parking lot at the Lifebuilder Community Center. Wheeler continued through the parking lot and up the sidewalk at the community center, hitting a tree, railing and several bushes before coming to rest on the sidewalk near Washington Street. During the ordeal, Barbara Feld, 76, Greencastle, was traveling on Arlington Street in a 2011 Kia Soul when part of the railing hit her vehicle. No injuries were reported. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000. Assisting the Greencastle Police Department was the Greencastle Building Inspector Dave Varvel.
