Madison Township Fire Department to hold fundraiser breakfast Saturday
The Madison Township Volunteer Fire Department will be holding a breakfast fundraiser on Saturday, June 28 from 7-11 a.m. at the firehouse.
The fire department was recently awarded $10,000 from the Putnam County Community Foundation, which will be used for the purchase of new self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBA). However, it will need to raise $2,200 before receiving the grant.
"We wear them into fires to help us breathe clean air," Lieutenant/EMS Officer Jonathan Addler said. "The ones we need to replace are 15 years old and they are outdated. They're not to be used anymore. They've reached their life."
Originally, the department applied for grant funding with the intention of purchasing new turnout gear along with the self-contained breathing apparatuses. However, receiving less funding than it was hoping for, the department will use the money to purchase the much needed SCBA's that cost $5,000-$6,000 each.
"Out of all our members, we only have three sets of (turnout) gear that's not outdated," Addler noted. "We need funding. We only have so much money a year to spend and we aren't able to afford these items."
With the purchase of the two self-contained breathing apparatuses, the department will have a total of six, which does not even cover half of the department.
"We need two, but we could use a few more than that," Addler explained. "We have four new ones that were bought four years ago, which will give us six total. There are 16 people on the department."
The fundraiser breakfast on Saturday will be free will donation. The fire department will be serving biscuits and gravy, pancakes, sausage, bacon and more.
If there are any questions or anyone wishes to donate, call Addler at 376-8074.
