Cougar swim team visits GHS
The Cougar swim team swam its last match of three-meet road trip, at Greencastle, which was coming off of a competitive meet at Crawfordsville.
The Tiger Sharks took the event with the girls winning 121-59 and the boys winning a close one 100-86.
"I think we had a really good meet tonight," NPHS coach Tony Gray said. "They've got a history of being a really good swim school. We're still sort of in our infancy. I told the kids that we used to crawl and now we are walking. We hope to be running here soon."
The Lady Cougars won two events with freshman Abby Spencer just beating out freshman Grace Gillen in the 200 free-style and Savannah Couch running away with a score of 143.2 in the diving event.
"I was real happy with the way we competed tonight," Gray said. "For the girls to get a few wins against Greencastle has not happened in 10 or 15 years. On the boys side we really fought hard and we just came up a bit short. But I'm real happy with the team effort."
The North Putnam boys pushed Greencastle in many events and late in the match, North Putnam found itself tied with the Tiger Shark boys.
The relays were particularly close as the men's 200 freestyle relay saw Greencastle team of sophomore Logan Wood, seniors Elijah Brattain, Taylor Secrest and junior Jacob Kessler win with a time of 1:36.99 beat out North Putnam sophomores Joseph Davis, Bailey Allen, Nickolas Young and junior Jonah Creamean with a time of 1:37.19.
Greencastle also took the 400 relay while North took a few individual events. Davis of North Putnam just beat of senior Tiger Shark Zach Secrest in the 100-yard breaststroke, North's Allen beat Wood by less than a second in the 100-yard freestyle followed closely by Greencastle's Conner Stimpert and Young took the 500-yard freestyle by almost a full minute.
GHS coach Kent Menzel was pleased with the dropped times by certain Tiger Sharks.
"One of the highlights of the night was (sophomore) Cameron Lewis' swim in the 500. It was an absolute breakthrough swim. In the same race (freshman) Preston Headley had an incredible swim and JJ Custis made it a trio of lifetime bests.
Another time Menzel was pleased with was that of freshman Amy Gong who raced the 100-yard freestyle alone in the pool and didn't let the pressure fazed her.
"Amy Gong is a brand new face on our team and she has been getting lifetime bests every time she hits the water," Menzel said. "Tonight everything really clicked. Not only did she get another lifetime best (1:39.65) but she had a solid swim. I'm excited to watch her become more efficient and in the process learn how to generate more power and get faster and faster."
North Putnam won't be in action until January when it takes on Danville at home on the third.
Greencastle's next match will be on Saturday at Edgewood.
