Harmonic inventiveness. The question is how differently can it be portrayed?

The DePauw Faculty Woodwind Ensemble offers a variety of possibilities on its spring concert Monday, March 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Green Center's Kresge Auditorium.

For this performance, the longstanding chamber ensemble -- featuring School of Music professors Anne Reynolds, flute; Leonid Sirotkin, oboe; Randy Salman, clarinet; Kara Stolle, bassoon; and Robert Danforth, horn -- will present a collection of works tracing the development of counterpoint and harmony throughout music history.

A trio sonata for flute, oboe and bassoon, by Czech baroque composer Jan Dimas Zelenka will open the concert, followed by William Scribner's arrangement of Argentine composer Astor Piazolla's mellow "Milonga Sin Palabras (Song Without Words)."

The group will also perform the new jazz woodwind quintet, "Headwinds," by award-winning composer and Ball State University jazz pianist Scott Routenberg.

Concluding the musical journey will be Leoš Janáek's woodwind sextet "Mlád' (or Youth)." Written in 1924, when the composer was celebrating his 70th birthday, this final piece constitutes a musical reminiscence of Janáek's youth as a chorister in the Augustine monastery in Brno, Moravia, including Moravian folk melodies from his birthplace.

Joining the Faculty Woodwind Ensemble on that piece will be Daniel Hickey on bass clarinet. Hickey, a graduating senior and student of Randy Salman, has been a valued part of the School of Music during his four years at DePauw, occupying many important solo positions in a variety of ensembles.

General admission to the Faculty Woodwind concert is $5. Tickets for seniors, youth and all students are free thanks to season sponsors Judson and Joyce Green.
