Faculty Select Series: DePauw Chamber Players

Monday, April 20

On Monday, the DePauw Faculty Chamber Players -- May Phang (piano), Erica Dicker (violin) and Eric Edberg (cello) -- will present a performance of "Quartet for the End of Time" in Kresge Auditorium, featuring guest clarinetist Randy Salman and introductory commentary by Professor Scott Perkins.

DePauw Jazz Ensemble with Guest Artist John Fedchock --Steven Snyder, director

The DPU Jazz Ensemble welcomes world-renowned jazz trombonist John Fedchock to Kresge stage for an evening of his own arrangements and compositions. Fedchock has played all over the world with some of the finest musicians including Woody Herman, Louis Bellson and Gerry Mulligan. Also joining them for a special evening of jazz at DePauwwill be the Greencastle Middle School Jazz Band.

Baladino and Rome Prize-winning composer Dan Visconti share the collaborative process behind "Nedudim." Learn about creating cross-genre arrangements that blur the lines between contemporary and folk music, incorporating traditional notation and improvisation along the way.

Faculty Select Series: Guest artist Mark Applebaum with DePauw Percussion Ensemble

When confronted with a piece of experimental music, Mark Applebaum, a professor of music composition at Stanford, asks: "Is it music? This is not the important question. The important question is, is it interesting?" Applebaum joins the DePauw Percussion Ensemble, student soloists and faculty guests in an evening of his works.

Green Guest Artist Concert: Baladino with Fifth House Ensemble

Performing on instruments both ancient and modern, Baladino has made a name for itself on the world stage--from traditional concert halls to YouTube. With its members hailing from Berlin and Tel Aviv, this Mediterranean folk band offers fresh, yet authentic interpretations of Jewish Saphardic and Ladino melodies. For the final Green Concert of the season, Baladino joins forces with Fifth House Ensemble to bring together instruments and traditions from the wide span of cultures that fed this musical language, updating it with their own youthful energy and contemporary backgrounds in jazz, improvisation and electronica. This presentation is supported in part by the ArtsMidwest touring fund.

The University Band kicks off its final concert performance of the semester with the great brass ensemble work, "Fanfare pour precede" ("La Péri"), by Paul Dukas, followed by DePauw faculty member James Beckel's "Make a Joyful Noise," the final two movements of Walter Hartley's Concerto for 23 Winds, the classic "Suite of Old American Dances" by Robert Russell Bennett, "Desi" by Michael Daugherty (a tribute to Cuban bandleader and television star, Desi Arnaz) and wraps up with the exciting "Festive Overture" by Dmitri Shostakovich. Audience members are asked to bring a non-perishable food item that will be donated to the Putnam County Emergency Food Pantry in exchange for a free ticket to the band performance.
