County Jail

One person has been lodged in the Putnam County Jail recently.

* Michael James Vance, 24, Greencastle, was arrested for violation of home detention.

City Police

Two recent property-damage accidents were investigated by Greencastle City Police officers.

* At 2:13 p.m. Wednesday, a two-vehicle mishap was reported on Percy Julian Drive at Avenue D.

Andrew Stouder, 40, Greencastle, was southbound on Percy Julian, driving a 2002 Ford Explorer, when his vehicle was reportedly struck from behind by a 2003 Chrsyler PT Cruiser driven by Kristie Walker, 42, Greencastle.

Walker told Officer Alber Epple that she was approaching the stopped Stouder vehicle but when she applied her brakes, they failed to stop her as the accelerator became stuck causing the engine to race. She was finally able to stop the car by putting it in park, but not before a collision occurred.

Total damage was estimated at $2,500-$5,000.

* At 5:39 p.m. April 22, a two-vehicle accident was reported on Indianapolis Road at Fifth Street on the city's East Side.

Yutong Sha, 18, Greencastle, was exiting the Old National Bank parking lot, driving a 2015 Mercedes Benz, when his view was reportedly obstructed by a vehicle turning into the adjacent Arby's.

As Sha turned, Officer Darrel Bunten reported, he failed to see an eastbound 2001 Dodge Dakota being driven by George Kelley, 67, Coatesville. Sha's car struck a 2007 Pace trailer attached to the Kelly vehicle, resulting in an estimated $1,000-$2,500 damage.

Sha was also ticketed by Officer Bunten for a learner's permit violation.

One additional citation was issued recently by city officers.

* At 8:05 p.m. Monday, Brandon Runnels, 25, Cloverdale, was cited by Officer Kyle Lee.

Stopped at Avenue B and 10th Street, Runnels was cited for an infraction of driving with a suspended license.

Sheriff's Department

The Putnam County Sheriff's Department has responded to numerous incidents recently.

* At 8:36 a.m. Monday, Jon N. Day, Bainbridge, was westbound on U.S. Highway 36 when he hit a deer with his front bumper.

Day advised Dep. Mathew Biggs that he was unable to avoid striking the animal as it crossed into the roadway.

Damages were estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

* At 7:18 a.m. Tuesday, Clayton E. Wilson, 16, Greencastle was leaving his driveway in a 2001 GMC Sonoma when he was struck by a 2007 Kia Rio driven by Leann R. White, 23, Greencastle.

Wilson advised Dep. Adam Hull that he did not see White heading southbound on County Road 325 West. White advised Hull that she did not have time to avoid the collision.

Damages were estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

* At 11:02 a.m. Wednesday, Alexandra King, 20, Greencastle, was northbound on Manhattan Road when she lost control of the 2013 Chrysler 200 she was driving as she approached a left turn. King advised Dep. James J. Boller that her vehicle went off the edge of the road before colliding head-on with Brent A. Heavin, 35, Greencastle, who was driving a 1998 Terra-Gator.

Heavin advised that as he traveled southbound, King entered his lane causing him to lock his brakes and swerve to the ditch in an attempt to avoid colliding.

Boller noted that no "marks, skid or yaw" were visible on or of the roadway and that a line of sand was undisturbed on the northbound side of the road, although he was able to see evidence of the point of collision and skid marks from Heavin's vehicle.

Damages were estimated at $10,000-$25,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department performed four medical assists and responded to several other dispatches recently.

* At 11:37 p.m. Friday, April 24, the GFD was dispatched to 330 Greenwood Ave. to investigate a fire alarm. It was determined the alarm was set off due to a candle being blown out under the smoke detector.

* At 5:48 p.m. Monday, April 27, the GFD investigated a fire alarm at 208 E. Olive St. with the assistance of the DePauw University Police Department. The two departments searched the area and were unable to determine what activated the alarm.

* At 5:28 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, the GFD responded to a fire alarm at 415 Anderson St. It was determined the alarm was set off due to steam from a shower.

* At 9:42 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, the GFD was dispatched to 22 Martinsville St. for a structure fire. There was a fire in the house that investigators said originated around or in the television.

* At 11:13 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, the GFD assisted with a hazardous material clean up on the curve just south of Limedale. A motor vehicle accident resulted in hazardous liquid chemicals to be spilled onto the road. The department assisted in the cleaning up debris and the fluids.

* At 2:34 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, the GFD responded to 1023 Avenue B to assist in the clean up following a motor vehicle accident.

* At 2:26 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, the GFD was dispatched to the area south of Crowe's Bridge due to a brush fire. Dry leaves and grass were smoldering when the department arrived, and were able to get it under control quickly.

* At 3:09 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, the GFD responded to the Peeler Art Center at 10 W. Hanna St. to investigate a fire alarm. It was determined maintenance work on the steam system activated the alarm.

* At 11:25 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, the GFD investigated a fire alarm at 904 S. College Ave. The alarm was activated due to dust. It was cleaned and reset.
