Railroad crossing work now due to begin Wednesday

Inclement weather kept CSX Railroad from undertaking its scheduled railroad crossing repair work on U.S. 231 just north of Shadowlawn Avenue in Greencastle as planned Monday and Tuesday.

However, with better weather predicted for Wednesday and Thursday, the new CSX plan is to cut out and reset the section of track near the old Monon restaurant site on Wednesday before repouring the asphalt around the crossing on Thursday.

That should put the project in line for the reopening of the crossing on Friday, Mayor Sue Murray said.

Although she expects CSX to totally block off the intersection, Mayor Murray urged motorists not to try to dodge around the barricades.

"If they try to cut through, they won't get out," she warned Tuesday afternoon, noting that a "huge section" of track will be removed, and because of that, vehicles won't be able to get out of the construction zone if drivers violate the restricted area.
