Tiger Cubs win over Clovers in exciting sweep
CLOVERDALE -- It was the first Putnam County volleyball matchup for Greencastle and Cloverdale Thursday and each team was looking for a victory to jumpstart what has been a tough season for both teams.
Greencastle was coming into this game on a two-game winning streak after wining one of its first six games.
Cloverdale earned a much needed win against Turkey Run Tuesday and was hoping to capitalize on the momentum built in that game.
Greencastle earned the win in straight sets, however after staving off a surging Cloverdale team that did not give up in front of its home crowd.
"We tried a couple of new things tonight and they were able to adjust really well so that was good to see," GHS coach Maggie Walters said. "We switched one of our back row players (Madison Trout) and put them in the front row and she did a good job. So it was good to see that we had some depth."
Greencastle took the first two games decidedly and Cloverdale, while giving good effort, had a hard time taking the lead over GHS.
"I played a lot of kids tonight," CHS coach Kathy Moore said. "I thought everybody that went in did a half-way decent job. I've been trying to find a combination that works. It's been on again and off again."
It was the final game that saw the Clovers' best play. CHS fell behind early 11-17 and it looked like it might be a quick match. But the Lady Clovers fought their way back to even around the 20-point mark even taking the lead before GHS finally ended the match 25-23.
"The one thing I will say about the girls," Moore said. "They really felt like they were in the match tonight. They feel good about being a team, which has been a little bit of a struggle for us. They are sort of bonding now, they are understanding each other and that's a good thing."
Greencastle packs on its third consecutive win and Walters is all business going forward.
"We'll just keep working on being able to execute the offense," she said. "Being able to side out before the team gets two or three points on us, because when that happens we start to fall apart. So its being able to minimize the points other teams push on us."
GHS plays Wednesday against North Montgomery. Cloverdale will travel to Owen Valley on Tuesday.
