Tuesday, September 8, 2015

CATARACT -- An Indianapolis man was pronounced dead Monday after he did not resurface after swimming at Cataract Falls.

Witnesses say the victim, Mario Luis Cardozo, was swimming when he appeared to tire and disappeared beneath the surface.

The area has multiple signs prohibiting swimming where the incident took place.

Indiana Conservation Officers responded to the scene. Cardozo's body was recovered and CPR was administered on site.

Conservation Officers are conducting an investigation of the incident but no foul play is suspected at this time. An autopsy is to be scheduled.

Complications arose when Conservation Officers attempted to identify the victim. At this time it appears Cardozo is an undocumented person approximately 27-29 years of age.

Responding agencies included the Owen County Sheriff Department, Cataract Township Fire Department and Owen County Ambulance Service.

  • I was there earlier in the afternoon. Despite the signs, there were dozens of people (including very small children)wading and swimming. It looks so peaceful and they have no idea how deep it is or how slick the rocks are.
