RPL to host number of events through Halloween weekend

ROACHDALE -- The library in Roachdale is playing host to two inspiring events this week -- one that celebrates the state's history and one that honors late library director Debbie Keffer, the latter of which is set to take place during the town's Fall Festival on Halloween.

DNR Underground Railroad presentation

Beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29, the Roachdale Public Library (RPL) will hold a presentation covering Indiana's portion of the Underground Railroad -- a network of secret routes and safe houses used by 19th-century enslaved peoples of African decent in the United States in efforts to escape to free states and Canada with the aid of abolitionists and allies who were sympathetic to their cause.

Jeannie Regan-Dinius of Indiana's DNR-DHPA program (Department of Natural Resources and Department of Historic Preservation and Archaeology, respectively) will present her work and field questions from interested attendants.

"If you've ever been interested in the role Indiana played in the Underground Railroad, this will be a great opportunity for you," current RPL Director Jennifer Stranger said.

For more information about the presentation, or if those interested require child care, contact the RPL by calling 522-1491. One can also email the RPL at roachdalepl@tds.net or visit www.roachdale.lib.in.us.

Blood drive for Debbie Keffer, walking tours

In an unrelated event (set to take place during the town's Fall Festival), the RPL will subsequently host a blood drive on Saturday, Oct. 31 from noon until 4 p.m. in honor of former-director Keffer.

Keffer, a known Halloween enthusiast, lost her battle with cancer earlier this year.

"Since Halloween was one of her favorite holidays, we'd like to honor her with a successful blood drive and enjoy a family-oriented afternoon," RPL Director Stranger said.

To schedule a donation time, call 522-1491, email roachdalepl@tds.net or visit donorpoint.org. If visiting donorpoint.org, select "Schedule Donation" and enter the town's zip code (46172).

"'O' blood types are especially needed," Stranger added.

Fall Festival Schedule

Several family events have been scheduled for the Fall Festival:

* 1:30 p.m. -- Fall Storytime (Preschool Shooting Stars)

* 1:45 p.m. -- Fall Storytime (Toddler Wiggles and Giggles)

* 2 - 4 p.m. -- Sensory Stations with Kimber Plemons (come and go anytime from 2 - 4 p.m.)

Following the blood drive, attendants will have the opportunity to join Putnam County historian Larry Tippin for a Historic Walking Tour listed as "Family Friendly" at 4 p.m. Another tour, titled "The Darker Side," will begin at 6 p.m. and is intended for teens and adults.

In addition to the aforementioned-contact listings, those interested can visit RPL's Facebook page and select either event for more information.
