CLOVERDALE -- The Cloverdale School Board voted to approve the 2016-17 school calendar at the regular November board meeting with some date changes for breaks.

Superintendent Greg Linton said he met with the teachers, building level administrators and other local superintendents to align the calendar before presenting it to the board.

The first student day in 2016 will be Monday, Aug. 8.

He noted a couple of changes in the calendar, which includes school being in session Dec. 19-20 in 2016 due to Christmas being the following Sunday. The holiday break will span from Dec. 21 to Jan. 3

In addition, fall and spring breaks will be one week later than this school year, falling on Oct. 17-21 and March 27-31, respectively. He noted the fall break will still be scheduled during Covered Bridge Festival.

During a building administration presentation, high school counselor Beth Sewell praised Evan Monnett for being designated as a National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist, which is based on PSAT scores.

Sewell explained Monnett is one of about 50,000 students with the highest scores in the nation.

In addition, the high school band, Emerald Command, has been nominated by Congressman Todd Rokita to represent Indiana during the Independence Day parade in Washington, D.C. on July 4, 2016.

Sewell read a letter to the board sent to the school on behalf of Congressman Rokita, which stressed his appreciation for the opportunity to represent talented students in his congressional district.
