Shooting at rural Putnam County home being investigated by ISP
PUTNAMVILLE -- A 59-year-old Putnam County man suffered a gunshot wound to the head Friday in a southwestern Putnam County incident, Indiana State Police at Putnamville reported.
Jeffrey Dewayne Perkins, of rural Greencastle, was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital after suffering what authorities said was a small-caliber gunshot wound to his head in an incident that took place about 4 p.m. Friday.
Perkins remained in serious to critical condition as of Sunday evening, authorities said.
The shooting reportedly occurred during a disagreement between two individuals over construction equipment.
Police are not releasing anything else in the case until report is submitted to the Putnam County Prosecutor, ISP Public Information Officer Sgt. Joe Watts told the Banner Graphic Sunday evening.
The Indiana State Police Putnamville Post received a 911 call from a female at 7645 S. State Road 243, Cloverdale, at that time, reporting two men were attempting to take items from the yard area at that location.
A trooper was dispatched to the home. He arrived at approximately 4:10, and immediately discovered the wounded Perkins inside a 2002 Chevrolet pickup.
Initial reports indicated that the victim had suffered what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head. The wound appeared to be a life-threatening injury, State Police reported.
Perkins was stabilized at the scene by Putnam County Operation Life paramedics and transported to an area allowing room for a helicopter landing zone near State Road 243 and Interstate 70. From there he was airlifted to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis via Stat Flight.
State Police detectives have processed the shooting scene and conducted several interviews related to the incident. ISP detectives have knowledge of all persons involved in this case, Watts said, adding that the shooting incident poses no danger to the public.
The investigation is ongoing and once completed, all reports will be submitted to the Putnam County Prosecutor's Office for review of any potential charges.
The State Police report is expected to be completed in 7-10 days, Watts noted.
The lead investigator in the case is ISP Putnamville Det. Don Anglin.
Assisting have been ISP Detectives F/Sgt. Jason Fajt and Michael Featherling, ISP Crime Scene Investigator Sgt. Jim Cody, ISP Sgt. Cory Robinson and Troopers James Crisp and David Cox Jr., along with Putnam County Prosecutor Tim Bookwalter, and personnel from the Cloverdale Fire Department, Putnam County Operation Life and Stat Flight.
