The North Putnam and South Putnam boys' and girls' track team split the meet Thursday at South Putnam with the Cougar girls' winning 75-47 and the Eagle boys' winning 90-65.

The Lady Cougars picked up points from all over and field events such as the first and second-place finish from Adri Millican and Emily Gasho as well as Gasho's first-place discus throw helped NPHS to its win.

"We had some good finishes in the field events," Cougar girls' coach Kevin Lutes said. "Our distance team just needs to get some more miles in. With the weather it's been hard to get them in. But we had some great finishes. In the high jump we took first and second in that."

Anita Spencer and Shelby Mason picked up wins in the high jump while Emily O'Neal and Kayla Pace went one and two in both the 100 and 200. Addie Reeves and Jayden Day went first and second in the 100 hurdles and Pace claim the top spot in the 300.

The South Putnam girls are coming off their first Putnam County Title in 15 years but have also lost a few high scoring Eagles to graduation and will have a younger team according to coach Brandon Welti.

Maddie McHugh, Lois Cheatham, Julianna DeLano and Ally Nichols were the first-place finishers for the Lady Eagles.

"We're really young in a lot of areas," Welti said. "We are a really small team. We don't have a lot of depth. So it puts a lot of pressure on them to perform well in their individual events. They are handling it well. Most girls are improving from meet to meet which is good to see. For the most part the attitude is good."

The Eagle boys earned their win by stacking runners and finishers together on the score sheet. In the 1600 Kieffer Vittetow, Michael Crossman and Logan Vandermark went one, two and three and in the 800 Vittetow, Lorenzo Mainetti and Austin Rumley also went one, two and three with Caleb Duncan of North Putnam hot on the heels of the Eagle trio.

"I really like what our kids our doing. The effort is there every day," Eagle boys' coach Nathan Aker said. "Our distance crew is phenomenal. We have got some big time talent there. Coach (Heath) Pruitt does a good job there. Then coach Matt Thoennes coaches our sprinters and he does a good job with those guys. He works a little bit with the field event guys."

Aker said that while the sprinters are the more seasoned athletes on the team the field events have a bit of a younger squad.

"I really like what those (field event) guys are doing," Aker continued. "We are kind of young there. We got the experience a bit in the distance and that's really showing. Kids are pushing and cheering for each other which is really good to see. Then we have a nice stable of throwers which is icing on the cake."

The big players in the field were Joey Masters and Devon Workman who earned first and second respectively in both shot put and discus and Jacob Lorimer took the first-place finish in the pole vault. Aker said the coaching staff has been trying different runners and different athletes in a variety of positions looking for the best combinations to which the players have been happily obliging.

The Cougar boys saw good finishes from Blake Everts who took first in both the 110 and 300 hurdles. Gage Bell and Brandon Barker took first in the 200-meter and the long Jump respectively.

"We found some things we to work on," NPHS boys' coach Greg Barrett said. "In the last 50 meters of our runs we need to get a little stronger. We didn't have a great night throwing. We know we have work to do there. With our distance guys I think coach Danaher does a good job with those guys. They know where they need to be pushed. These guys pushed us to where we thought we should be tonight."

In the 100-meter dash Jordon Bean and Caleb Warner took first and second place for the Cougars and Duncan won the 3200. NPHS also won the 4x1 and the 4x4.

The Cougar coaching staff said the goal is for the athletes to be peaking by sectionals and with the steady improvement that they see, they are optimistic about their team this season.
