Water main breaks on West Franklin Street

Utility workers repair a water main on west Franklin Street between the Banner Graphic and Abstract & title.

Workers spent Wednesday morning fixing a water main on West Franklin Street in downtown Greencastle.

An estimated 600,000 gallons of water was lost in the break, which was just west of Jackson Street between the Banner Graphic building and Abstract & Title.

Signs of a problem first came to light Tuesday evening when Banner Graphic employees could hear and feel a vibration in the water pipe that connects to the building's sprinkler system.

City water employees were on the scene Tuesday night, discovering that they could feel the vibration on the pavement above the site of the break.

Crews from the Greencastle Utility Department and Joe Spiker Excavating were on the scene Wednesday, and had the pipe fixed by around 11 a.m.

Although authorities have an estimate of the amount of water lost, it is unclear where the water flowed, as it was not discovered farther downhill on Franklin Street.
