Tractor driver in U.S. 36 crash dies as a result of injuries

A 29-year-old Putnam County Greencastle man, critically injured in an accident on the U.S. 36 bridge over Raccoon Lake Wednesday afternoon, has died, authorities said.

Joseph Biggs, of Greencastle, died at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, to which he had been arilifted following the Parke County accident.

The Marion County Coroner's Office Friday listed cause of death as "multiple traumatic brain injuries."

Just before 3 p.m. Wednesday, Biggs was driving a farm tractor westbound, pulling an implement when the vehicle was reportedly rear-ended by a Kenworth dump truck driven by Anthony Fiscus, 43, of Dennison, Ill., Parke County authorities reported.

Impact caused the tractor to overturn onto the highway, while the dump truck went through a guardrail, ending up on its side and dumping its load of rock.

Biggs was thrown off the tractor. Fiscus was trapped inside the truck for more than two hours before being extricated.

Fiscus was also airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he remained listed in critical but stable condition as of Thursday night.

According to a Facebook notation by the Madison Township Volunteer Fire Department, Biggs was one of its volunteer firefighters.

The fire department posted that Biggs had passed away, asking that residents and friends "keep his family in your thoughts and prayers."

"Joe was a great asset to our department and will be truly missed," the post concluded.

  • I've seen many dump truck drivers speeding down rural and county roads. I hope he wasn't trying to pass the tractor and ended up misjudging how close he was .. and jarring the implement.

The implements aren't meant to sway, so any jolt could send the tractor on its side or top.

So sorry for the family of this young man.
