Sophomore goalie gets second shutout

Greencastle completed a perfect pair of girls' soccer matches this week on Tuesday evening, defeating North Montgomery 4-0 at DePauw's Boswell Field.

Sophomore goalie Claire Gillen recorded her second straight shutout, and drew praise from her coach.

"Claire has established herself pretty well coming in as a sophomore, and she's going to continue to do that," coach Angie Weeks said. "She leads the defensive line, which extends out to our midfield, and just owns her space.

"When we control the midfield, a lot of good things happen and that's what happened [Tuesday]."

Erin Thomas had three goals and Whitney Weinschenk had one goal as the Tiger Cubs improved to 2-1.

"This is phenomenal to play on back-to-back nights and come home with two big Ws," Weeks said. "I'm really excited. This is a young team, and they are mighty.

"We are a small squad, and we going to keep working on possession and distributing and just taking care of business."

On Monday, the GHS girls team brought home its first victory with a 2-0 triumph at Crawfordsville.

"With cooler temperatures and a sunny sky, the Lady Tigers were able to keep the opponents' shots deflected," Weeks said. "The team continued to make gains on the field both defensively and offensively."

Gillen had 10 saves in recording her first shutout of the season.

Both Tiger Cub goals came in the first half, as Thomas scored on an assist from Weinschenk for the first one and Weinschenk added the second one on a corner kick.

Greencastle's Whitney Weinschenk controls the ball while getting ready to make a play against North Montgomery on Tuesday evening.

Greencastle hosts North Putnam on Tuesday for the Putnam County championship.
