Lengthy game hands NP first loss
SULLIVAN — If two lengthy rain delays weren’t enough to put a damper on the evening for North Putnam, then Sullivan running back Trevor McGill certainly finished the job.
The senior scored four touchdowns on 31 carries and 168 yards Friday as the Golden Arrows (3-1, 2-0 WIC) defeated the Cougars (3-1, 1-1 WIC) 33-19.
Mason Dean opened the scoring for Sullivan, intercepting a Hayden Rudes pass and returning it 20 yards for the score with 6:03 to play in the first.
McGill’s first touchdown came less than three minutes later, giving Sullivan a 14-0 lead late in the first quarter.
However, the first of a pair of long touchdown runs by the Cougars kept their hopes afloat, as Ethan Christy ran 82 yards for a touchdown with 2:17 to go in the first.
Gage Bell’s PAT made it 14-7 with 1:07 to play in the first.
After another McGill touchdown early in the second, Cougar running back Solomon Gross added a long score of his own, dashing 80 yards with 4:04 to play in the half to make the score 21-13.
That’s where the score stayed for a long while, as a first lightning delay came shortly after the touchdown and another followed at halftime.
After the long break, McGill was back up to his old ways, scoring from 16 yards out with 8:08 to go in the third and from one yard out with 7:53 left in the game.
Facing a three-score deficit, the Cougars had just one more touchdown in them.
Rudes connected with tight end Max Haste on a 16-yard strike with 2:45 to play, making the score 33-19.
On the strength of the long runs, Christy (13 carries, 129 yards) and Gross (seven carries, 96 yards) led the Cougar offense.
Rudes was 11-for-19 passing for 58 yards with one interception. Haste hauled in six of those for 46 yards.
The loss drops North Putnam one game behind Greencastle and Sullivan for first place in the WIC West.
The Cougars host Cloverdale at 7 p.m. next Friday.
