Arrows top SP, stay in first

SULLIVAN — South Putnam’s record slipped to 0-4 in the West Division of the Western Indiana Conference after dropping a 42-7 decision at Sullivan in a high school football game Friday night.

The Eagles, now 3-4 overall, have been outscored 143-47 in WIC games.

The game took almost four hours to play because of multiple lightning delays, the first one even before the game started.

Sullivan extended its winning streak to five games, pushing its record to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the West Division of the WIC.

Sullivan jumped ahead 21-0 as three different players scored in the first quarter.

Mason Dean, who caught a 16-yard TD pass from Trey Powell, scored on a 7-yard run to put the Arrows ahead 28-0 with five minutes and 37 seconds remaining in the first half.

South Putnam then put together its lone scoring drive.

The Eagles drove 46 yards in 10 plays, consuming almost four minutes.

A 60-yard kickoff return by Connor Cain and clipping penalty left South Putnam in Sullivan territory to begin the march.

Kyle Shaffer, who rushed for 149 yards on 31 carries, had seven rushes for 34 yards on the drive.

He scored from the Sullivan 7-yard line with 38.5 seconds left in the half.

Devon Workman booted the PAT as the Eagles trailed 28-7 at intermission.

“Shaffer runs hard,” said Sullivan coach Trent Olson. “He has legs like tree trunks.

“Our tacklers just bounced off of him. He works hard and earns every yard he gets.”

The Eagles, who were without quarterback Allen Plunkett for a third consecutive game (due to a concussion), amassed 200 yards of offense.

They finished with 142 yards in returns.

Powell completed 15 of 27 passes for 297 yards and two TDs. Dakota Caton had five catches for 145 yards, including a 69-yard TD on a shuffle pass, his 15th overall touchdown.

Trevor Magill had TD runs of 1 and 5 yards, finishing with 17 carries for 71 yards.

South Putnam will play at Northview next Friday at 7p.m. in a conference contest.

Sullivan will play at West Vigo in another conference game at 7 p.m. next Friday.
