Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies responded to three recent property-damage crashes.

• At 8:32 a.m. on Thursday, Lindsey J. Cottrell, 30, Coatesville, was westbound on U.S. 36 in a 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer. Barbara J. Whitehead, 55, Danville, was ahead of Cottrell in a 2009 Ford Escape preparing to turn southbound onto County Road 25 West.

Cottrell told Maj. Dwight Simmons she was distracted by her dog and rear-ended Whitehead’s vehicle, causing extensive front-end damage to her vehicle.

PMH ambulance transported Whitehead to Hendricks Regional Hospital with a head laceration.

Bainbridge Fire Department and Deputy Virgil Lanning also assisted at the scene.

Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

• At 4:32 a.m. on Thursday, Jeremy W. Bills, 37, Fillmore, was northbound on Main Street in Fillmore in a 2001 Steiner tractor pulling a flatbed trailer.

Deputy Anthony Brown reported the load on the trailer was higher than 15 feet and caught power lines over the road. This pulled down a utility pole.

As the pole fell, it disconnected power from the residence at 216 N. Main St., pulling wires from the resident’s internal breaker box.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

• At 4:15 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 10, Robert J. Crawford Peterson, 29, Terre Haute, was eastbound on Interstate 70 near the 37-mile marker when he hit a deer.

Deputy Jacob Harrington estimated damage at $1,001-$2,500. The vehicle was towed.

Deputy Brown assisted at the scene.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department recently responded to five dispatches, two lift assists and one medical run.

• At 11:58 p.m. on Thursday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 107 W. Hanna St. The alarm was determined to have been set off unnecessarily. GFD reset the alarm before returning to station at 12:08 a.m.

• At 2:38 a.m. on Friday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 330 Greenwood Ave. The alarm was determined to have been set off unnecessarily due to a malfunctioning system. GFD reset the alarm before returning to station at 3:30 a.m.

• At 9:32 p.m. on Friday, GFD assisted the Cloverdale and Jefferson Township fire departments with the extinguishment, salvage and overhaul of a structure fire located at 7046 S. County Road 825 East. GFD returned to station at 1:35 a.m.

• At 11:49 a.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to a fire alarm due to cooking at 106 Spring St. GFD subsequently returned to station at 11:58 a.m.

• At 4:02 p.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to reports of an unauthorized burn at 714 Vale St. GFD saw to the extinguishment of the trash fire before returning to station at 4:48 p.m.
