Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies responded a number of property-damage crashes during the snowfall Tuesday morning, including a pair of overturned vehicle and a three-car pile-up.

• At 1 p.m. on Tuesday, David L. Burchett, 32, Greenwood, was westbound on State Road 42 approaching the Y-intersection with County Road 1100 South in a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer.

As Burchett left 42 and entered 1100 South, he lost control and began to fishtail. Deputy Matt Biggs reported the SUV left the south side of the road, hit a culvert and flipped on its top.

Burchett was initially entrapped. He complained of neck and shoulder pain and was taken to Putnam County Hospital by Owen County EMS.

• At 9:40 a.m. on Tuesday, Veronica L. Austin, 28, Indianapolis, was eastbound on U.S. 36 near Groveland in a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer.

Snow heavily covered the road at the time and Austin had very little tread on her tires.

The rear of the vehicle began to slide and she lost control. The vehicle crossed left of center and entered a ditch, where it rolled on its top.

The driver and two passengers were examined and released without injuries.

Reserve Deputy Ken Rozelle estimated damage at $5,001-$10,000. The vehicle was towed.

• At 8:38 a.m. on Tuesday, Daniel F. Hollenbeck, 46, Bainbridge, was southbound on Manhattan Road in a 2004 GMC Yukon when he lost control in the snow. Hollenbeck crossed left of center and hit the front end of a 2002 Mazda Tribute driven by Bambi J. Barger, 37, Greencastle.

Both vehicles slid off the east side of the road into a yard.

Barger complained of knee pain but refused medical treatment.

Both vehicles were towed. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

• At 8:03 a.m. on Tuesday, Tamara S. Edington, 52, Brazil, was northbound on U.S. 231 near Crosswinds Drive in Cloverdale in 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer.

Edington told Capt. Tom Helmer she was following other vehicles in the heavy snowfall. The other vehicles began to slow and when Edington hit her brakes, she lost traction in her rear tires and began to slide.

While trying to regain control, she crossed left of center, into the path of a southbound 2016 Ford Focus driven by Lindsey Meek, 34, Cloverdale.

Meek’s car hit the right front of Edington’s SUV, which spun around and came to rest facing north.

With Meek’s vehicle coming to an abrupt stop, it was rear-ended by a 2010 Ford Taurus sheriff’s car driven by Patrick R. McFadden, 62, Cloverdale.

This spun Meek’s vehicle and it came to rest facing east, with McFadden’s car against it, facing west.

Operation Life took Edington to Putnam County Hospital for back and chest pain. Another OL ambulance took Meek to Hendricks Regional for chest pain.

Helmer was assisted at the scene by the Cloverdale Township Fire Department, INDOT, Deputy Virgil Lanning and Cloverdale Sgt. Charlie Hallam.

Meek’s and Edington’s vehicles were towed. Damage was estimated at $25,001-$50,000.

Deputies investigated a pair of other recent accidents.

• At 7:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Cara M. Eveland, 34, Kokomo, was westbound on U.S. 36 in a 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe when she hit a deer.

Deputy Elizabeth Campbell estimated damage at $5,001-$10,000.

• At 8:20 p.m. on Tuesday, Olivia R. Boler, 17, Greencastle, was westbound on U.S. 40 attempting to turn left into South Putnam High School in a 2015 Chevrolet Cruze.

Boler was rear-ended by the westbound 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Alicia C. Haywood, 17, Greencastle.

Maj. Dwight Simmons estimated damage at $1,001-$2,500.
