DePauw women claim tourney title

Sydney Kopp scored 14 of her game-high 23 points in the opening period and led the DePauw women’s basketball team to a 78-39 win over Coast Guard in the Amy Hasbrook Memorial Classic. The Tigers improved to 12-1 with their ninth straight win, while the Bears slipped to 2-7.

The teams exchanged buckets to start the game, but Kopp hit a pair of threes to begin a stretch in which she scored 11 straight points to give DePauw a 13-5 lead. She finished the quarter with another trey to push the Tigers’ lead to 24-12 at the quarter break.

DePauw held the Bears to just five second-quarter points and expanded the lead to 37-17 at the intermission.

The Tigers sealed the victory early in the third as Claire Ryan scored before Kopp added the next seven to make it 46-19 with 6:08 left in the quarter.

Kopp’s 23 came in just 22 minutes, while Kylie Morris added a career-high 11. Ryan paced the team with seven rebounds and seven assists, while committing just one turnover. Melinda Franke recorded a career-high six steals.

Gill Gerton led Coast Guard with 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks.

The Tigers return to North Coast Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, January 4 when they host Ohio Wesleyan at 6 p.m.

DePauw (men) 56, Wentworth 43 — At Tampa, Fla., on Thursday, the DePauw men’s basketball team put forth its best defensive performance of the season in a win to open the Tampa Bay Shootout on Thursday.

The 43 points was a season-low in points allowed.

Cris Burrough led DePauw with 14 points, and David Vogel went 3-of-6 from beyond the arc to add 11 points. Leading scorer Luke Lattner failed to reach double digits for the first time this year finishing with six points, but he had a career-high six assists.

DePauw held a 27-16 lead at the half but saw its lead diminish to just four points midway through the second half.

It was a 40-35 game with 6:54 remaining before DePauw closed the game on a 16-8 run. Burrough scored the final five points for the Tigers, while Vogel hit a 3-pointer at 2:31 to put DePauw up 51-39.

DePauw improves to 5-5 overall, while Wentworth drops to 2-7.

The Tigers will wrap up play in the Tampa Bay Shootout on Friday, playing against SUNY-Canton in the championship game at 3 p.m.
