HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Tiger Cubs top Monrovia 10-9; Eagles play No. 14 Sullivan tough

Tuesday, May 2, 2017

MONROVIA — Greencastle pushed across three runs in the top of the seventh inning on Monday to record a 10-9, come-from-behind victory over Monrovia on a cold, blustery day.

The Tiger Cubs got only five hits, compared to 14 for the Bulldogs, but coach Ben Wells’ young team found a way to win the kind of game it has had trouble winning this season.

“This was a big win for a program, and a great building block for our team,” Wells said. “Our guys did a great job of staying together and fighting for all seven innings. I was extremely proud of our resiliency and toughness. We did a lot of stuff tonight that does not show up in stat lines, but is what anyone would watch and call good, fundamental baseball. “The conditions were not great, and it really says a lot about our guys to score three big runs in the seventh to take the lead.”

Alex Costin, Jackie Scanland and Nick Costin each hit a double for the Tiger Cubs, with Rylan Lucas and Jacob Harris adding singles. Nick Costin had two RBI, while Alex Costin, Abe Wade, Gus Manion and Scanland each drove in a run.

Alex Costin and Jacob Meyer each scored three runs.

Wells was pleased his team had a more patient approach at bat, as the Tiger Cubs drew 14 walks on the day that helped lead to nine stolen bases.

“We are finally starting to have some good approaches at the plate,” he said. “We hit the ball pretty hard all night. Nick and Alex Costin have really been doing a great job of getting us going and setting the tone at the top of the lineup. Having a veteran like Jacob Harris in the nine hole really has given us a lot of confidence later in the lineup.”

Wells noted that Meyer showed why he is such a valuable asset to the Tiger Cubs’ team.

“He was on base three times, had three stolen bases and scored every time,” he said. “That type of speed and presence really puts a lot of pressure on the other team.”

Manion pitched the final three innings in relief of Scanland and Tanner Sanders.

“I really can’t say enough about how Gus Manion came in and pitched for us,” Wells said. “He got himself into a bit of a jam in the bottom of the seventh, but made some big pitches when he needed to and got the win for us.

“Overall, we played a really solid game,” Wells said. “I was pleased with how we fielded the ball. Monrovia is a very good team and they do a great job of making contact.”

• Sullivan 2, South Putnam 0 — Campbellsville-bound Dylan Wood of the Eagles locked up with University of Evansville recruit Sam Steimel of the No. 14-ranked Golden Arrows in a pitcher’s duel, with the teams combining for just five hits.

“We played a tough game tonight against a very good opponent,” SP coach Brady Rhodes said. “We had an amazing game on the mound by Dylan Wood, who I felt pitched well enough for the win, but a few things just didn’t go our way in key moments in the game.

“These things happen in baseball, but I was very proud of the way our guys stayed focused and battled through those situation.”

Rhodes thought his team needed to be better at adjusting its plan of attack at the plate sooner in the game.

“We are also trying to limit some mental lapses in the field,” he said. “Other than that, we really did play a good game.”

Greencastle 172, Danville 187 — Blaise Hasty was the medalist for the Tiger Cubs with a 40 in a 15-stroke win over the Warriors.

Jaxon Parmley added a 41, while Jake Bennett had a 44, Kyle Tesmer had a 47, Brett Sosebee had a 48, Conner Taylor had a 51, Sam Hagen had a 53, Josh Bomgardner had a 57 and Henry Carter had a 61.

“The Cubs played Danville on Monday in very difficult playing conditions, with very high strong winds, cool temperatures and off and on rain,” Greencastle coach Steve Paquin said. “Windy Hill CC played to its name, so all the scores were higher than usual.”

Paquin thought Hasty and Parmley both had good rounds in bad conditions.

“Both players struck the ball solidly,” he said.

The Cubs are currently 6-0 in dual meets, with one win, a tie for fourth and a ninth-place finish in tournaments.

“Improvement continues in the trouble areas of chipping and putting and should get better as the season continues,” Paquin said.
