TERRE HAUTE – Putnam County schools will advance numerous athletes to Tuesday’s Bloomington North Regional next week after their performances at Tuesday’s Terre Haute North Sectional.

Greencastle finished second in the team standings with 96 points, trailing only Terre Haute South.

South Putnam finished fifth as a team, while North Putnam was eighth and Cloverdale was 10th.

Greencastle’s Mia Stevens finished second in shot put Tuesday night at the Terre Haute North Girls’ Track Sectional.

Leading the individual performers, as expected, was Greencastle sophomore Emma Wilson – who successfully defended her sectional titles in both the 1,600 and 3,200 runs.

Wilson also ran a leg on Greencastle’s 4x800 relay team, which finished second to Terre Haute South. Wilson was joined on the relay team by freshman Molly Eising and sophomores Mika Mozawa and Sydney Kallem.

Other Putnam County winners were South Putnam junior Ally Nichols, who was in the middle of the pack at the halfway mark but had a strong second lap to capture the 800-meter run; South Putnam sophomore Aubrey Barker, who won the long jump; and North Putnam sophomore Emily Gasho, who defended her sectional discus title from last spring.

North Putnam’s Emily Gasho took the top spot in the discus for the second straight year.

Those athletes placing second were Barker in the high jump, sophomore Sydney Lewis of Greencastle in the pole vault, Greencastle sophomore Seelye Stoffregen in the 100 hurdles and Greencastle senior Mia Stevens in the shot put.

Third-place finishers were Greencastle sophomore Jada Amis in the shot put, Cloverdale freshman Kenzie Stoltz in the pole vault and the South Putnam 4x400 relay team consisting of Edwards, Nichols, senior Lois Cheatham and freshman Lexi Vanihel.

Athletes finishing in the top three in each event are guaranteed to move on to the regional. Based on a complex system, additional athletes not in the top three can also advance.

These guidelines, according to the IHSAA, are:

- 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place sectional winners in all individual events and relays plus any individual or relay team meeting the 3 Participant Standard in the sectional finals of their event.

- If the top 3 finishers plus 3 Participant Standard advancers in an event is less than 16, the next best performances from the corresponding sectionals shall be added to bring the total number of entrants to 16 in each event.

Athletes also advancing under those guidelines are Greencastle freshman Keridan Hollis in the 100 and Tiger Cub sophomore Sydney Kallem in the 1,600.

The advancing athletes will compete at Bloomington North against qualifiers from sectionals at Bloomington North, Jeffersonville and Seymour for the right to advance to the state finals.

• Tiger Cubs suffer first loss – At Deer Creek, Greencastle suffered its first loss of the season in a dual, tri or quad match by finishing second to Cascade.

The Cadets had a team score of 166, while Greencastle had a 176 and Monrovia was third with 232.

Jackson Franchville of Cascade was the medalist with a four-under par 32.

Jake Bennett led Greencastle with a 40, while Jaxon Parmley had a 44, Blaise Hasty had a 45, Kyle Tesmer had a 47 and Conner Taylor added a 49.

“Cascade had a season best-166 and their No. 1 player fired a great score of 4 under par 32. He made two eagles on the two par 5s on the front nine and scored even par on the other seven holes. The Cubs were unable to match or outscore that great round.”

Greencastle coach Steve Paquin said his team got good scores, but had too many penalty shots and putts that didn’t fall.

“We hit a lot of good shots, but playing summer rules made it very difficult to score,” Paquin said. “Only Kyle was able to match or better his season average. This young team will bounce back quickly and will not have an adverse effect from this loss.”

The Tiger Cubs play Owen Valley today at Rolling Meadows.

• Cloverdale 189, Turkey Run 197 – At Clover Meadows, Zach Nichols shot a 40 to lead the Clovers and win medalist honors.

Zarek Wellington added a 46, while Tyler Harrison shot a 51, Drew Boyette had a 52, Wyatt Helterbrand shot a 56 and Jason Miller added a 61.

“It was a beautiful day, but the wind was a real factor,” Cloverdale coach Doug Wokoun said. “It was a two-club wind almost the entire match. That makes Zach’s round even more impressive.

“He played very well, and avoided the problems he has been fighting,” Wokoun added. “We are hoping this will be a springboard for him going into the last couple of weeks.”

Wokoun noted that Wellington played well, but had one glitch.

“He is striking the ball well, and is close to accomplishing some great things,” he said. “Drew had a tough stretch in the teeth of the wind, but settled down and finished very well.

“Tyler and Wyatt both had stretches of solid play, and both need to find ways to extend those out to a full round,” Wokoun added. “Jason had two holes that, sadly, defined a round that otherwise was not too bad.”

Wokoun likes the improvement that his team made from Monday’s round.

“We continued to do some things better,” he said. “It is just a process, and we have to keep working at those things holding us back.”

Cloverdale (5-6) travels to Martinsville on Thursday.

Softball

• Cloverdale 4, Greencastle 3 – Just three days after the Clovers defeated the Tiger Cubs by 13 runs, Greencastle nearly turned the equation completely around before falling in a close game.

Baylee Hamilton improved her pitching record to 3-1 with the win as the Clovers improved to 17-4.

Hannah Long had two doubles for the Clovers, while Kelsey Helterbrand had a home run and two RBI and Lauren Meek had a double and an RBI.

Julia Mundy was the tough-luck losing pitcher for the Tiger Cubs, and added two singles and an RBI at the plate.

Layna Robinson, Brittany Ricketts, Grace Paul and Ivy Wright each added a single.

“Greencastle’s defense was very solid behind a well-pitched game by Julia Mundy,” Cloverdale coach Jim Spencer said. “We made just enough plays defensively and scored just enough runs to come away with the win.”

Greencastle 002 001 0 – 3 6 0

Cloverdale 001 120 x – 4 6 1
