Understanding health benefits of drinking water

Monday, June 19, 2017

As warmer temperatures approach us, we oftentimes want to enjoy those summer time sweets that seem to satisfy our taste buds, but not necessarily satisfying to our waistline. We tend to forget about a refreshing, low-calorie, mouth-watering, inexpensive drink that is commonly known as water.

Water is an important component in our lives and provides many health benefits when consumed.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention outlines a host of ways that water helps the body. For water helps in the following ways:

1) Regulate body temperature.

2) Lubricate and cushion joins (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2016).

3) Provides protection for sensitive tissues and the spinal cord.

4) Aids in getting rid of waste through urination, perspiration and bowel movements.

In understanding the health benefits of drinking water, it is also important to list the signs of dehydration, which is when our bodies are in need of water.

The signs of dehydration are different in younger children than they are in older adults.

Per research conducted by Mayo Clinic, the signs of each age group are as followed:

Infant or young child

•Dry mouth and tongue
•No tears when crying
•No wet diapers for three hours
•Sunken eyes, cheeks
•Sunken soft spot on top of skull
•Listlessness or irritability

Adult

•Extreme thirst
•Less frequent urination
•Dark-colored urine
•Fatigue
•Dizziness
•Confusion

Knowledge on the importance of water consumption and dehydration are crucial during the summer months.
