Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County Sheriff’s deputies investigated four recent property-damage accidents.

• An improper passing attempt around a group of motorcycles caused an accident on U.S. 36 in Clinton Township Saturday evening.

At 6:12 p.m. Bruce L. Fisher, 63, Anderson, was eastbound in a 2010 Ford Edge. He told Deputy Robert Soilleux he was following a long line of vehicles and motorcycles that were traveling too slow for his liking.

Fisher said he attempted to pass the group of motorcycles, but was unable to do so all at once. Instead, he pulled in between them and slowed down.

According to Anderson, a motorcycle then “rammed into” the back of his vehicle.

The motorcycle rider, Christopher S. Uehlein, 51, Morristown, told Soilleux “It all happened so fast. I never seen him coming.”

Uehlein said Fisher was passing on a double-yellow line, even forcing oncoming traffic off the roadway before merging into the line of motorcycles and almost hitting the bike in front of him. This caused Fisher to slow suddenly, at which time Uehlein steered his 2012 Harley-Davidson into the oncoming lane to avoid a collision.

Unfortunately, Fisher also swerved left, colliding with Uehlein’s bike.

A pair of witnesses in another vehicle told the deputy they saw the Edge attempt to pass the motorcycles before swerving into the middle of the group, brake and then serve back into the westbound lane.

Soilleux said that upon exiting the vehicle, Fisher had poor balance, used his vehicle for support and slurred his words. However, Fisher passed field sobriety tests and tested at .000 BAC on a portable breath test.

No one was injured. The motorcycle received minimal damage to the right foot peg, and the rear driver side door of Fisher’s vehicle was dented and scratched. Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

Although improper passing was named as the primary cause, no citation was noted in the accident report.

• At 9:20 a.m. on Sunday, Rebecca D. Brown, 57, Sullivan, was westbound on U.S. 40 around County Road 800 West when a deer ran into the driver’s side of her 2014 Chevrolet Silverado.

Deputy Jacob Harrington estimated damage at $2,501-$5,000.

• At 4:40 p.m. on Friday, Mark L. Trail, 51, Brazil, was eastbound on U.S. 40 in a 1989 Ford Crown Victoria.

Trail told Deputy Jacob Harrington he remembered taking a drink from his beverage but did not remember what happened next, saying he may have fallen asleep.

Harrington said it appeared the car left the road and went down an embankment. It then rolled before coming to rest on its side.

Trail was medically cleared by Operation Life.

The car was towed. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

•At 11:45 a.m. on Friday, Brooke E. Carter, 21, Poland, was eastbound in a curve on County Road 525 South in a 2015 Chevrolet Cruze. Wesley S. Kendall, 39, Greencastle, was backing from his driveway onto County Road 525 South in a 2006 Subaru Forester.

Both drivers said their views were obstructed by the curve. As Carter made her way through the curve, she could not avoid Kendall’s vehicle, making rear passenger side impact.

Carter’s car was towed. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.
