Riggle, Gillen pace Tiger Cubs to wins over South Putnam

Greencastle swept a pair of high school swim meets from visiting South Putnam on Tuesday, winning the boys’ meet 96-89 and the girls’ event by a 107-73 score.

“It was a wonderful night of great performances and fast swimming,” Greencastle coach Kent Menzel said. “I feel that our wins were powered by Jack Riggle on the boys’ side with wins in the 50 and 100 free races, and by Grace Gillen on the girls’ side, who easily won the 200 and 100 free events.

Menzel added that other swimmers critical to the boys’ victory were seniors Preston Headley (who won the 100 breast), Jack Romer (who took the backstroke) and J.J. Custis (who drove the Cub relays).

“This has become a wonderful meet, and I am very impressed by the work that coach [Anna] Kendall has done with the Eagle team.”

Jake Hutcheson won two events for the Eagles, taking the 200- and 500-yard freestyles.

• Gillen wins pair — A short-handed Greencastle girls’ team placed third in a triangular meet with North Montgomery and Danville on Tuesday.

North Montgomery and Danville tied for first with 124 points, while Greencastle had 73.

Grace Gillen led Greencastle with two event wins in the 50 and 100 free.

“The team delivered some excellent swims for the night while half of its members were back home starring in the GHS school play,” Tiger Cub coach Kent Menzel said. “Overall our young champions were very fast with lifetime best swims recorded by most of the team.”
