Greencastle picks up WIC sweep at West Vigo

Saturday, December 2, 2017

WEST TERRE HAUTE — The Greencastle boys rode their big gun to victory, while the GHS girls used balanced scoring to prevail in a Tiger Cub high school basketball sweep Friday night at West Vigo.

Behind 30 points from leading scorer Colin York, the GHS boys triumphed 53-43 to move to 2-1 on the year in winning their WIC conference opener. The winless Vikings are now 0-3.

Meanwhile, the Tiger Cub girls parlayed 13 points from Jayln Duff, 10 from Bailey Shuee, seven from Seelye Stoffregen and a half-dozen from Rose White into a 50-21 thrashing of the winless Vikings (0-8). It was the sixth straight win for GHS, which stands 6-3 on the season.

York got things started early for the boys with his seven first-quarter points matching West Vigo’s entire output as the Cubs led 11-7 after one stop.

GHS pushed the lead to 22-11 at the half and exploded for a 23-point third quarter as York had 13 in the period to forge a 45-29 Greencastle advantage.

“Colin (York) shot the ball very well tonight and his production helped fuel us in a hard-fought game,” second-year GHS coach Bryce Rector said.

Hitting four three-pointers in the final period, the Vikings outscored the Tiger Cubs 14-8 to close the gap to the final 10-point margin.

“I thought our guys came out and battled tonight,” Rector added. “West Vigo is a scrappy team and I thought we did a pretty good job of handling them in the first half. They hit some shots in the second half, but our kids did a nice job of responding in a tough environment.

“Gavin Bollman and Brody Whitaker did a nice job on the boards tonight (14 and 11 rebounds, respectively). That was an area that we have focused on since Danville and our guys did a great job winning the glass, 43-28.

“If we can continue to defend without fouling and rebound like we are capable of, it puts us in a great position to win a lot of ballgames,” Rector added.

The Greencastle girls took control early, fashioning a 26-9 halftime lead behind 12 points from Duff and a pair of Shuee three-pointers.

The GHS girls pushed the advantage to 34-16 at the end of three periods and used a balanced 16-point fourth quarter to close out a 29-point victory.

The Greencastle defense, which forced 25 turnovers, didn’t allow a Viking player to score more than four points on the night. That was Grace Likens who had two fourth-quarter baskets to lead West Vigo.
