KNIGHTSTOWN – South Putnam’s girls traveled to the Hickory Gym in Knightstown to battle Eminence as part of a day-long series of games played in the historic gymnasium used as the homecourt for the Hickory Huskers in the 1986 movie “Hoosiers.”

The Eagles improved their record to 14-4 on the season with a 92-23 win over the Eels, who are coached by former South Putnam coach Tim Garver.

South Putnam jumped out to a 22-0 lead after one quarter, expanding that advantage to 44-4 at halftime and 68-9 after three periods.

“It was a great experience for the girls to play in the historic gym,” South Putnam coach Brian Gardner said. “The girls were able to play really well all day. We started off the first quarter and played well, causing some turnovers that allowed us to get out to an early lead. Holding them to zero points in the first quarter was great.”

Gardner was pleased that his team shot the ball well during the game, and that all of his junior varsity players were able to get some good playing time.

“We did a great job of finding open girls with moving the ball and running our offense,” Gardner said. “Every girl was able to play during the game, as in the second half our JV played a lot of minutes which was good for them to experience playing in the gym.

“Overall it was a very good experience for our girls and we were able to play really well to get ourselves ready for the upcoming week.”

Lillie Stein led five players in double figures with 19 points, followed by Caitlin Capps, Miranda Bieghler and Lexi Vanihel with 14 each and Chloe Custis with 10.

Twelve different Eagles reached the scoring column.
