Ballot set for May primary election
Some late shuffling in the race for Putnam County Council District 3 highlighted the final days of the primary election filing period, which closed at noon on Friday.
One Republican removed his name from consideration, while two others added their names to the ballot.
The race for the GOP nomination now includes former County Councilman Jay Fogle, Kyle Nobles and Danny Wallace. Former candidate Haywood Ware pulled his name from the ballot on Friday.
On the Democrat side, Matt Cummings is seeking the District 3 seat currently held by Republican Darrel Thomas, who is retiring at year’s end.
Three other county-level races are contested in the Republican primary.
Incumbent Recorder Tracy Bridges faces a challenge from Rhonda Chaney.
Likewise, Sheriff Scott Stockton will face off against Jerrod Baugh in the GOP primary.
Also on the Republican side, incumbent District 2 Commissioner Rick Woodall will be challenged by Kim R. Hyten.
Democrat Steve Cash is also seeking the District 2 commissioner seat.
Unopposed Republican incumbents at the county level include Prosecutor Tim Bookwalter, Clerk Heather Gilbert, Surveyor David Penturf, District 1 Councilman David Fuhrman, District 2 Councilman Jill Bridgewater and District 4 Councilman Keith Berry.
Republican Janet Brown is also the only candidate for county assessor in her bid to replace Nancy Dennis.
Another race that got interesting in the late stages of the filing period is for the at-large position on the Cloverdale Town Council. Republican Coweta Patton had filed her paperwork early in the period, but two GOP challengers added their names this week in Jake Day and Gregory Jay Sr.
Cloverdale Third Ward Councilman Cindy Holland (R) is unopposed in her re-election bid.
Three townships have contested races for the Republican township trustee nomination.
In Washington Township, incumbent Pat Sheldon actually has two challengers from within her own party in Jessie Hoskins and John McPherson.
In Jefferson Township, Jerett Query is challenging current trustee Debra Robinson for the GOP nod. Likewise, in Cloverdale Township, Pat McFadden is running against incumbent Dale Monnett.
Three other townships have a Republican and a Democrat seeking the trustee position. In Clinton Township, Tina Sillery (R) and Chelsea Fidler (D) are both seeking the seat.
In Floyd Township, incumbent Marsha Carrington (R) will get a challenge in the fall from Democrat Tom Chiarella.
In Madison Township, GOP incumbent Jeff Alexander will be challenged by Democrat J.D. Grove.
Unopposed Republicans for trustee positions include: Russell, Candy Stewart; Franklin, Clyde Coulter; Jackson, Mike Fritz; Monroe, Richard Pronckus; Greencastle, Steve Butts; Marion, Gregory Arnold; and Warren, Karen Nelson Heavin.
