Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated seven recent property-damage accidents.

• At 4:49 a.m. on Monday, Robert E. Dicks, 45, Roachdale, was eastbound on State Road 236, just east of County Road 50 West, in a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze when he hit a deer.

Deputy Brian Helmer reported the vehicle sustained heavy damage, with the airbags deploying.

Dicks declined and ambulance despite his arms being sore from airbag deployment. His wife told Helmer she would be taking him to the hospital.

The vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 1:24 a.m. on Sunday James W. Dillworth, 26, Plainfield, was eastbound on Interstate 70 in a 2017 Nissan Versa when he hit a deer.

The car was towed. Deputy Robert Soilleux estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 3:46 p.m. on Saturday, Dustin R. Phillips, 39, Greencastle, was southbound on County Road 250 East in a 2014 Chevrolet Sonic when a deer jumped into his path.

Phillips told Deputy Helmer he swerved to miss the animal and lost control of his vehicle, leaving the road and hitting a utility pole, snapping it in two.

Phillips declined medical attention.

The car was towed. Damage was estimated at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 5:09 a.m. on Saturday, Johnathan E. Hyde, 36, Bainbridge, was westbound on U.S. 36 in a 2001 Mercedes Benz C320.

Just west of County Road 325 East, the car left the road, hitting a culvert and going airborne. This sent the vehicle over a driveway before knocking down a post.

Hyde told Helmer that he fell asleep at the wheel.

Airbag deployment caused a cut on Hyde’s hand, but he declined medical attention at the scene.

The car was towed. Damage was estimated at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 9:01 p.m. on Friday, Erick C. Judy, 27, Roachdale, was northbound on County Road 50 East in a 2014 GMC Terrain when he hit a deer.

Deputy Soilleux estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 12:55 p.m. on Friday, Sherri L. Wahl, 56, Cloverdale, was eastbound on Market Street in Cloverdale, approaching the four-way intersection at Grant Street in a 2006 Chevrolet Equinox. Thomas J. Kanakis, 75, Cloverdale, was northbound on Grant, also approaching the intersection in a 2006 Jeep Commander.

Each driver told Deputy Matt Biggs that he or she had come to a complete stop before proceeding through the intersection. Each driver further stated that the other vehicle had not stopped, causing the collision.

The front bumper of the Kanakis vehicle hit the right rear of the Wahl vehicle.

A witness at a nearby residence told Biggs that it appeared as if Kanakis did not stop, causing the accident.

Biggs found no yaw marks or skid marks on the road and both vehicles had moved before he arrived.

Wahl’s vehicle had to be towed from the scene. The Kanakis vehicle had a radiator leak, but he had removed it from the road. He was going to make arrangements to have it removed.

Damage was estimated at $5,000-$10,000.
