Monrovia 3, Cloverdale 1 — At Monrovia, the Clovers lost to the Bulldogs but coach Jim Spencer saw a lot of positives.

“I was really pleased with some aspects of our game that we have been working on in practice,” he said, “but we continued to struggle with serve receive and passing. As a result, we spent too much time out of system offensively and could not maintain ball control.”

Monrovia won the first set 25-18 and the second set 25-20, before the Clovers came back to win the third set 25-18. Monrovia closed out the match by winning the fourth set 25-17.

The Bulldogs took advantage of the problems the Clovers had.

“Monrovia made us pay for every physical and mental mistake throughout the night,” Spencer said. “We led at 15 points in three of the sets, but could not finish in two of the sets. We continue to give up five- or six-point runs to our opponents and get stuck in certain rotations.”

The Clovers fell to 12-5 and host Brown County on Tuesday night.
