Set for Saturday, May 11 at the Putnam County Fairgrounds Community Building, the Lip Sync Team Challenge will be the chief fundraiser for the Putnam County Youth Development Commission in 2019. A total of 12 teams from around the county will compete for the title. Representing their teams at the kickoff meeting Thursday night are (front from left) Jill Albers of North Putnam Community Schools, Penny Long of Fillmore Elementary School, Elizabeth Kirsch of Kirsch Family Dentistry, Bryan Langdoc of Gobin United Methodist Church, Yo Goodpaster of Greencastle High School, (back) Ashley Burns of First National Bank, Amy Clark of RE/MAX Cornerstone, Peggy Lilly of Area 30 Career Center, Elizabeth Meyer of Endeavor Communications and Greg Linton of Cloverdale Community Schools. For the first time in more than a decade, there will be no dancing the night away for the benefit of the Putnam County Youth Development Commission.

Likewise, no dancing to the music nor dancing in the streets.

Your mama, in fact, don’t dance (at least not for PCYDC).

No dancing.

But singing ... or more accurately, syncing? There will be syncing.

Why, they’ll be teaching the world to sync or maybe syncing the blues or even syncing in the rain.

And your bird can sync, if it really wants.

The PCYDC officially announced its 2019 fundraiser on Thursday, the inaugural Lip Sync Team Challenge, set for Saturday, May 11 at the Putnam County Fairgrounds Community Building.

The Lip Sync Team Challenge will serve as the new fundraiser (they’re hoping it becomes an annual event) for the PCYDC, replacing the popular Dancing with the Putnam County Stars, which had a 10-year run from 2009 to 2018.

Like its predecessor did a decade earlier, the Lip Sync Team Challenge takes a concept made popular on TV (in this case Jimmy Fallon’s lip sync battles from “The Tonight Show”) and localizes it in the hopes of revealing hidden talents of prominent community members.

Failing that, maybe they’ll at least make fools of themselves in the name of a worthy cause.

One big difference in moving forward with the Lip Sync Team Challenge is the number of people it requires. Each team will feature one lead and four backups, meaning a total of 60 people will be representing the 12 organizations involved.

While the exact rosters have not been finalized in some cases, the 12 teams competing include Area 30 Career Center, Cloverdale Community Schools, Endeavor Communications, Fillmore Elementary School, First National Bank, Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church, the Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce, Greencastle High School, Kirsch Family Dentistry, North Putnam Community Schools, Putnam County Hospital and RE/MAX Cornerstone.

There will also be no designated judges of the lip syncing. Instead, each $50 ticket, which includes dinner and the show, will also come with one voting ballot.

Additionally, audience members will have the chance to purchase more ballots for $5, with all proceeds going to the Youth Development Commission.

Of course, the PCYDC is utilizing a number of avenues to raise funds for the event.

Each team has committed to raising a minimum of $2,000, which does not include ticket sales.

The commission is also looking for sponsors at several different levels. For $3,000, the title sponsor will have its name on all advertising or news releases regarding the event, as well as getting table of eight at the event and 30 voting ballots.

Other sponsorship levels include $1,000 for gold, $500 for silver and $250 for bronze.

There will also be a silent auction to raise funds for the PCYDC.

Cost of the event is $50 per ticket or a table of eight for $400. Tickets will be available at the PCYDC office 10-1/2 N. Jackson St., Greencastle, from March 15 through April 15.

The Putnam County Youth Development Commission enables youths to participate and contribute to their community in positive ways through programs such as CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocates), Choices, Coats for Kids, National Night Out, Putnam County Teen Court and school-based Teen Court.

  • Very creative way to continue a great tradition of fundraising for a wonderful cause.
