Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated three recent property-damage crashes.

• At 10:25 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, deputies Robert Soilleux and Riley Houghton were called to County Road 300 East in the area of 500 North, where a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado had crashed into a pole.

The pole was on fire and broken about halfway up, with the top part of the pole having landed on the hood of the truck. The wires had shorted against the ground wire on the pole, setting it on fire.

The truck is registered to Ronald M. Fleener, 50, Mooresville, who is classified as a habitual traffic violator.

Witnesses told the deputies they were being followed by two trucks when they heard a loud bang and saw a flash of light. At that point, the headlights disappeared.

The witnesses returned to the scene, where they saw the crashed truck as well as three white men in cowboy hats walking away from the scene. All three got into a white Ford F250 with mud tires and fled to the south.

The deputies observed that Fleener’s truck had apparently been southbound when it failed to negotiate a bend in the road. The truck instead left the west side of the road and entered a ditch, where it hit metal fence posts and a gas pipeline marker before crashing into the utility pole.

Several Coors Light and Bud Light beer cans were scattered around Fleener’s truck. The truck was unlocked and showed no sign of forced entry or damage to the ignition.

Soilleux also observed numbers of unopened beer cans on ice in the truck bed, as well as four full cans in the tall grass near the truck.

The inside of Fleener’s truck smelled strongly of alcohol with one open can in the driver’s side cupholder, still showing condensation.

Fleener has multiple prior DUI arrests and convictions in Morgan, Hendricks and Brown counties, as well as a guilty plea last fall to driving as a habitual traffic violator.

The truck was towed. Soilleux estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 9:11 a.m. on Thursday, Brandi L. Clodfelter, 38, Danville, was southbound on County Road 775 East in a 2018 Nissan rental car.

Clodfelter told Deputy Josh Boller a black passenger car with a female driver sideswiped her at the crest of a hill.

The other car continued from the scene and could not be located.

Boller listed damage at $1,000-$2,500.

• At 5:11 a.m. on Friday, Michael A. Moore, 59, Rockville, was eastbound on U.S. 36 in a 1997 Dodge Dakota when he hit a deer.

Deputy Brian Helmer estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.
