James Braxton Black

James Braxton Black, 91, of Greencastle, passed away on Monday, May 27, 2019.

He was born Sept. 18, 1927, the son of Robert E. and Mary Crystelle (Stringer) Black, and was a 1945 graduate of Greencastle High School.

He was a United States Army veteran, having served in the South Pacific during World War II.

James was an electrical engineer with IBM for 33 years, retiring in 1988. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge; a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby (Saathoff) Black; daughter, Cindy Black; son, Braxton (Sara) Black; two grandchildren, David (Abby) Black-Disalvo and James Black; and a sister, Ruth Eiteljorge.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Roberta “Bobbie” Crawley.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 31 at the Forest Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. on Friday, May 31 at the Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the donor’s favorite charity in memory of James.
