Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated five recent property-damage crashes.

• At 8:09 p.m. on Sunday, William A. Piechota, 37, Warsaw, was northbound on Heritage Drive just north of exit 50 in a 2016 Nissan Verano. He was going down a hill with a curve at the bottom. The road was west an Piechota started to fishtail and crossed left of center.

Sarah L. Lackner, 38, Coatesville, was southbound in a 2007 Toyota Camry. She told Helmer that Piechota’s vehicle crossed left of center. She said Piechota was approaching at a high rate of speed and she could not avoid a collision.

Deputy Brian Helmer asked Piechota how fast he was traveling and he said 35 mph. Helmer told him it appeared he was traveling a little faster than 35 in the wet conditions.

Helmer estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 10:23 a.m. on Sunday, Deputy Kyle Lee was dispatched to a vehicle into a bridge at 3511 N. CR 25 East. Lee arrived to find the reporting party, who said the driver had left the scene but he had taken photos.

Lee reviewed the photos and recognized the driver from a department email about a door-to-door salesman who was supposed to be the area. Lee called the man from a number included in the email. The driver said he had gone to a gas station to air up his tires but would return.

As he waited, Lee called the Putnam County Highway Department about the damage, which included a barrier knocked into the creek.

The driver, Jacob Pughsley, 19, Birmingham, Ala., said he was traveling down the road slowly, reviewing his map, when he must have veered right and hit the bridge barrier.

Lee said the paint transfer on the 2018 Toyota Corolla was consistent with a low-speed impact.

He estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, April Harris, 40, Terre Haute, was eastbound on U.S. 40 near County Road 500 West in a 2000 Chrysler Voyager when she began to hydroplane.

She told Deputy Lee her van traveled through the grass median and across the westbound lanes before coming to rest in the woodline just north of U.S. 40.

Harris was not injured.

There was significant damage to the van and guardrail. The van was towed.

Lee estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 11 p.m. on Saturday, Madison V. Mosely, 20, Spencer, was eastbound on County Road 1200 South heading toward U.S. 231 in a 2009 Kia Sportage.

Mosley told Deputy Anthony Brown a tree fell into the road as he was driving, hitting the hood and windshield.

Brown estimated damage at $1,000-$25,000.

• At 8:36 p.m. on Friday, Ebony L. Shorts, 26, Indianapolis, was westbound on Lexington Court, Heritage Lake, in a 2015 Honda Fit.

Shorts told Deputy Jeffery Freeman the sun was in her eyes and she hit an unoccupied 2014 Ford Escort registered to Kacie Piedmont, Fishers.

Freeman estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 9:35 a.m. on Monday, GFD was dispatched to the Percy L. Julian Science and Mathematics Center at DePauw University for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 9:39 and determined that the alarm was due to construction work. GFD returned to station at 9:45 a.m.
