County Jail

Five people were booked in the Putnam County Jail recently.

Sunday

• At 7:38 p.m. James E. Kirby, 38, Cloverdale, was booked in on a pair of warrants, for resisting law enforcement and for neglect of a dependent.

• At 4:19 p.m. Michael Thomas VanEvery, 39, Cloverdale, was lodged at the jail on two counts of theft.

Saturday

• At 8:34 p.m. Robert Lee Washburn, 39, Roachdale, was housed at the jail for trespassing.

Friday

• At 8:33 p.m. Matthew David Mundie, 32, Indianapolis, was booked in for failure to stop after an accident, criminal recklessness and driving while intoxicated.

• At 4:23 p.m. Melissa Ann Johnson, 32, Fillmore, was taken into custody for possession of methamphetamine, driving with a suspended license with a prior conviction, possession of paraphernalia and driving without a license.

City Police

Two recent arrests were reported by Greencastle City Police officers.

• At 11:54 p.m. Saturday, James Robert Horrick 21, Terre Haute, was arrested by Officer Elsiana Crosby.

Stopped on South Indiana Street, Horrick was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

Horrick, who registered a blood-alcohol content of .082 percent, was lodged in the Putnam County Jail.

• At 6:15 p.m. Friday, Natasha Renee Mason, 30, Greencastle, was arrested by Capt. Chris Jones at the Greencastle Walmart store.

Charged with theft and criminal trespass, Mason was lodged in the Putnam County Jail.

Using the U-scan device at the checkout station, she allegedly pretended to scan a number of items by running them over the scanner with the UPC code up.

Among the $27.61 in items for which she allegedly did not pay were Halloween ninja swords, nasal spray, garlic bread, rice, soft drinks and Smirnoff Vodka.

Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated three recent property-damage crashes.

• At 6:34 a.m. on Friday, Cole Smith, 19, Roachdale, was eastbound on State Road 236 in a 2002 Subaru Impreza when he hit a deer.

Deputy Tanner Brown estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 11:50 a.m. on Thursday, Patricia G. Gregory, 70, Martinsville, was northbound on County Road 725 East near the intersection with State Road 240 in a 2008 Toyota Sienna.

Gregory told Deputy Kyle Lee she saw another vehicle approaching so she got over to the left to let it pass.

In doing so, she ran slightly off the road and hit a concrete bridge barrier, causing severe damage to her van.

Gregory was checked out by a medic and signed a statement of release.

The van was towed. Lee estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, Larry J. Wilson, 65, Greencastle, was southbound on U.S. 231 in a 2013 Toyota Corolla when he hit a deer.

Deputy Lee estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000. The car was towed.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department responded to seven recent dispatches:

• At 1:12 a.m. on Friday, GFD was dispatched to Phi Delta Theta for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 1:19 but could not determine a cause for the alarm. The alarm was reset. GFD left at 1:34 a.m.

• At 8:12 p.m. on Friday, GFD was dispatched to Humbert Hall for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 8:14 and determined the alarm was activated due to hairspray. The alarm was then reset. GFD left at 8:19 p.m.

• At 6:34 a.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to a motor vehicle accident with injuries located at 3587 S. U.S. 231. Units arrived on the scene at 6:38 and assisted with patient care. GFD went back into service at 7:13 p.m.

• GFD responded to three consecutive dispatches to Humbert Hall Sunday morning:

Firefighters were dispatched for a fire alarm at 1:09 a.m., and arrived at 1:14. No cause for the alarm could be determined. The alarm was reset. GFD left at 1:21 a.m.

At 1:26 a.m., they were called back for another alarm, arriving at 1:34. GFD determined that this alarm was due to smoking. The alarm was then reset. GFD left at 1:42 a.m.

GFD was recalled to the building at 1:41 a.m., and arrived at 1:46. GFD determined that there was a faulty detector. GFD blew out the detector and then reset the alarm. GFD left at 1:54 a.m.

• At 10:58 a.m. on Sunday, GFD was dispatched to 330 Greenwood Ave. for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 11:04 a.m. but could not determine a cause for the alarm. The alarm was reset. GFD left at 11:18 a.m.

Additionally, GFD performed six medical assists and had two disregards during this time.
