College Avenue in Greencastle was shut down for nearly two hours as fire personnel addressed a grease fire which started inside a home.

A box alarm went out to area fire departments at 10:45 a.m. for a structure fire at 412 N. College Ave.

However, the Greencastle Fire Department and Madison Township Volunteer Fire Department came on the scene.

According to its log on the incident, GFD arrived at the residence at 10:48 a.m. and was advised by the homeowner that a fire had started in the kitchen due to grease being ignited. Heavy smoke was issuing from the building.

Fire personnel then proceeded to gain entry to the property and then douse the flames. GFD related that siding was then pulled to ensure the fire had not extended into the home’s internal structure.

As such, GFD reported that approximately 1,000 gallons of water were used to put out the fire.

The Reelsville/Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department covered the Greencastle station during the effort.

1-800-BoardUp was then put in contact with the homeowner, and the Red Cross was also notified after the fire was extinguished.

GFD was logged as going back into service as of 12:34 p.m. Friday afternoon.

GFD could not provide an estimate of the damages resulting from the fire as of a call from the Banner Graphic late Friday afternoon.
