Mary Elizabeth Wood, 89, of Greencastle, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020 at Mill Pond Health Campus.

Mary was born in Ocala, Fla. on Feb. 16, 1930, the daughter of Paul R. and Laufa (Moore) Kendle, and was a graduate of Petersburg High School.

She went on to attend Greenville College and Indiana State University. She earned her master’s degree in education from Oakland City University in 1972.

Mrs. Wood taught English for more than 25 years, and retired from Monrovia High School in 1995.

She was a member of Fillmore United Methodist Church, and held several offices in the United Methodist Church. Singing was a big part of her life, and she sang for many churches and gatherings with her sisters.

Survivors include three children, Maurice “Sonny” Wood (wife Marcia) of Kankakee, Ill., Janet Rock (husband August) of Palm Bay, Fla. and Mark Wood of Greencastle; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 56 years, Charles Edward Wood; a brother; and five sisters.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22 at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home with Pastor Brian Palmer-Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until time of service on Wednesday.
