Louis J. ‘Lou’ Fontaine

Louis J. “Lou” Fontaine died Feb. 12, 2020 in Greencastle at Asbury Towers. He was 89.

Lou was born April 1, 1930 in Lafayette.

He graduated from DePauw in 1952 with a degree in speech and English. He was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon and Sigma Delta Chi. Lou earned his master’s degree at Indiana University.

He married Nancy H. Cox. As an Army sergeant he instructed new recruits at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

He taught English and was on the admissions staff at Culver Military Academy 1954-56.

He joined the DePauw admissions staff in 1957 and retired in 1980 as director of admissions and financial aid. He was director of the Edward Rector Scholarship Foundation.

Lou was accomplished at woodworking and as a stained glass artist and passionate about the Greek system at DePauw. He belonged to the Presbyterian Church and volunteered at the Putnam County Public Library, helping with genealogy and local history. Lou was chairman of the Putnam County Community Foundation Scholarship Selection Committee. As president of the Friends of the Greencastle Fire Department he was instrumental in the return and restoration of Greencastle’s 1928 Studebaker open cab fire engine.

Lou is survived by sons Greg of Greencastle and Jeff, and daughter-in-law Susan, of New Port Richey, Fla.; two granddaughters, Lauren and Carol; and a grandson, Dirk.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur V. Fontaine and Faye Nixon Fontaine.

Lou will be buried in a private ceremony. A memorial is scheduled for 3 p.m. March 14 Meharry Hall, East College. Presbyterian Pastor Wes Kendall will officiate.
