Shortly after the DePauw football team won the Monon Bell in November, Athletic Director Stevie Baker-Watson made it a point of getting the 300-pound relic out in the community.

The idea, Baker-Watson said, is that when the Bell is in DePauw’s possession, it belongs to the Greencastle community.

The Monon Bell will be out and about again this week with a visit to Buffalo Wild Wings in Greencastle on Wednesday, March 4 from 6-9 p.m.

Beyond being a chance to see, touch and even ring the historic prize of the DePauw-Wabash football rivalry, the event will also be a chance to interact with the present and future of DePauw football.

New DePauw head coach Brett Dietz, as well as some players and other athletic staff members, will be in attendance.

Dietz was promoted to head coach in January after 10 years as an assistant coach in the program — the last six as offensive coordinator.

Bill Lynch announced his retirement from the helm of the program days after the Tigers’ thrilling 17-13 win over Wabash.

Perhaps most importantly, though, the event will help raise money for the Special Olympics. The management of the east side restaurant is making sure to turn it into a charitable event, pledging a portion of the day’s proceeds to the cause chosen by Baker-Waton and the athletic department.

Sweetening the pot will be a piece of DePauw football history that will be up for auction. (Of course, not the Bell.)

One of the Buffalo Wild Wings bartenders is a former neighbor of legendary Tiger Coach Nick Mourouzis, who once gave her one of his DePauw football jackets, complete with his name embroidered on it.

With such a worthy cause, the jacket is being donated for a silent auction, with all funds raised going to the Special Olympics.

Buffalo Wild Wings is located at 1310 Indianapolis Rd. and is open from 11 a.m.-midnight on Wednesday, though the Bell will only be on location from 6-9 p.m.
