Round Barn Daycare receives Come Back Stronger grant

Wednesday, June 10, 2020

As our state continues to recover from the hardship of COVID-19, one critical need identified is the ongoing need for safe, quality child care for families and parents as they return to work. Through a grant made available by the Lilly Endowment and Early Learning Indiana, one of Greencastle’s local child care centers recently got a valuable boost.

Round Barn Daycare, a Level 3 Paths to Quality Center located at Greencastle Presbyterian Church, was awarded $15,000 as part of the $15 million Come Back Stronger Fund. Round Barn Daycare will use the grant funds to support safety-related expenses and challenges as it continues to serve families in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Like many organizations and businesses in our community, these past few months have been hard,” Pastor Wes Kendall said. “We had to make the tough decision to suspend our daycare in mid-March, but it was great to see our staff reaching out to our families — including some who took it upon themselves to make sure our families had child care. I really credit our staff and board for working hard throughout this time. They know how much child care means to our young families. We had to meet by Zoom, but we did so weekly — all so we could open back up in mid-May,”

Margo Thomas, the daycare board president, is excited to put these funds to use.

“We’ve already taken steps to ensure we continue to practice safety in the midst of this virus,” Thomas said. “We were able to open with smaller classroom sizes, and we worked hard to make sure our cleaning procedures were updated. This grant will help us to purchase everything from furniture to new learning materials to even additional staff to help us provide even more care for our kids during this time.”

Round Barn Daycare currently has openings available for any family looking for child care. Families or parents who are interested can contact Greencastle Presbyterian Church at 653-5713.

  • Fun fact: this daycare has a history of covering up the sexual assault of multiple children.

  • kayce.jean.kean,

I don’t find anything in your comment to be “fun”. Have you gone to the authorities to report such an allegation? Be careful, such accusations are grounds for slander.

  • Well if it's on Facebook it's gotta be true, right? And who is "they"?

  • Do your own research on it. The mother has kept very good receipts of her interaction with authorities. Just a warning to other parents; you can choose to ignore it, but be aware.

    So I did a search for #justiceforalaska...

It comes up with a bunch of stuff for some transvestite reality show contestant.

Not sure what that has to do with Round Barn Day Care.

Perhaps Kayce.jean.kean could post a link?

  • From the state website:

With the support of Lilly Endowment Inc., Early Learning Indiana is proud to present the Come Back Stronger Fund, a $15 million fund designed to reinforce Indiana’s supply of high-quality early learning opportunities and support providers across the state who are committed to serving vulnerable family populations.

Licensed and registered centers, ministries and family child care home providers in Indiana serving children from households at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level are eligible to apply. Providers must serve children ages 0-5 and be a Paths to QUALITY™ level 3 or 4 provider or a Paths to QUALITY™ Level 2 with a recently demonstrated commitment to achieving a higher level of program quality. Commitments to achieving a higher level of quality are defined by the organization’s response to the Indiana Self-Assessment Tool (I-SAT) and completion of related prerequisite training(s).

Grant amounts of up to $40,000 will be tiered based on the number of children served, with an additional sum available to providers with 25% or more of their enrolled children receiving federal Child Care and Development Fund or On My Way Pre-K assistance from the state of Indiana.

Come Back Stronger Fund grants will help offset new expenses incurred by providers to safely operate and continue delivering high-quality early learning experiences because of the pandemic. Eligible organizations may request supports across the following categories:

    Equipment, supplies and materials

    Staffing

    Physical environments

    Professional services

    Replacement supply

For full eligibility criteria, further details on approved uses of funding and additional information, visit the fund website at earlylearningindiana.org/comebackstronger. Applicants who need assistance with their submission should email stronger@earlylearningindiana.org to request support.
