Victim identified in Friday death investigation
An 18-year-old Greencastle woman died in a Friday-night shooting on the city’s east side.
Hailey Whitis died of a single gunshot wound to the chest, the Greencastle Police Department announced Monday.
At 9:12 p.m., Putnam County 911 Dispatch received a call of an accidental gunshot at 6 Kentwood Dr. Officers arriving on the scene found a female later identified Whitis lying on the floor with significant amount of blood in the chest area.
Officers on the scene, along with EMS and fire personnel determined Whitis was deceased.
An autopsy performed Monday morning revealed the gunshot wound to be the cause of death.
Detectives from the Greencastle Police Department, Putnam County Sheriff’s Department and the Indiana State Police continue to investigate how the shooting took place.
