Greencastle native to oversee Powerball organization
Having served as the executive director of the Hoosier Lottery since 2013, a Greencastle Native will spend the next year overseeing the organization in charge of Powerball.
Sarah Monnett Taylor was recently elected by the board of directors of the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) as its board president for fiscal year 2021.
“It’s my honor to help lead the 38 member lotteries with a strategic plan to help each one responsibly maximize profits for all the good causes they support,” Taylor, a Greencastle High School and Indiana University graduate, said. “Powerball is the number one product of the Multi-State Lottery Association and has successfully helped generate billions for good causes.
The daughter of longtime Greencastle residents Mary Jane Monnett and Keith Monnett, Taylor was initially appointed to the Hoosier Lottery position by Gov. Mike Pence in 2013.
Gov. Eric Holcomb reappointed her to the position in 2016.
Taylor will be the 31st MUSL board president and the first ever to serve from the Hoosier Lottery.
She most recently served as vice president. Prior to that she chaired both the audit committee and the finance and audit committee and was the first Hoosier Lottery director to serve in both roles, as well.
Indiana to date has the most Powerball Jackpot winners with 39 total.
Taylor emphasized the good MUSL member states can do with the profits from membership.
“Each member lottery offers one or more multi-jurisdictional game, and all profits are retained by the individual lotteries to fund projects or purposes approved by their authorizing legislatures,” Taylor said. “In Indiana alone it helps us contribute to police, firefighter pension fund and teacher’s retirement funds to the tune of $30 million each.”
