PCPL launching Library of Things Oct. 1

Friday, September 18, 2020

With funding from the Dr. James Elrod Fund at the Hendricks County Community Foundation, the Putnam County Public Library has purchased materials to offer from a Library of Things.

The Library of Things is a collection of items that are unconventional to libraries, but may be of use to the community. They can include kitchen appliances, tools, crafting supplies, outdoor games, board games and other items. These are loanable just like any other library material.

“The ongoing funding from the Dr. Elrod Fund has allowed us to purchase several items that will allow our patrons to borrow things that they might only use a few times per year, or items they might like to try before they buy,” said PCPL Director Matt McClelland.

Kenneth Pingleton, as well as Danielle and Matthew Featherston of Kiln Dried Creations are additional sponsors of this project.

The initial purchases have included a pressure washer, metal detector and upholstery cleaner.

There are also plans to expand if the program becomes a success.

“We’ve tried to purchase a variety of items that includes something for everyone, and we plan to expand it as we learn what our patrons are most interested in,” McClelland added.

The public is invited to a kick-off event on Oct. 1 from 3:30-6:30 p.m. The library will preview the items in the collection, as well as provide refreshments and outdoor games.

In accordance with health and safety guidelines, the event will be located in the library parking lot and social distancing recommendations will be followed. Games will also be sanitized after each use.

The Library of Things will become available on Oct. 2, and be located in the library lobby. Materials can be checked out for five days and renewed one time. Some items will be limited to those 18 years and older. Patrons are required to read and sign a Library of Things agreement prior to checking out any of the items.

Patrons will be able to view all of the items in the Library of Things at www.pcpl21.org beginning on Oct. 1.

For more information about library services, programs and collections, readers may call 653-2755 or visit PCPL’s website.

The library is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on Sundays.
